Im not sure they can be stopped, but from my point of view i also dont really liek my neighbours cats in my garden, as they always poo in my nicely dug over veg plot and its not nice to find when you are hand weeding, also they scare the birds from the bird table.
Having said that i would never go and tell the neighbours to keep the cat from the garden its not like a dog that can be trained are they?Always on the hunt for a bargain0 -
We have a cat, it belongs really to our daughter who lives with us,
now common sense tells me that you cannot stop cats roaming,
what a stupid statement for her to say. if you have permission from the landlord then you are doing nothing wrong.
It would be crueil to keep the cats in 24/7
She cannot do anything,
Suggest she buys a water pistol, it wont harm the cats but eventually they will get the message and stay out of her garden.
Its her responsibility to do something if she doestn want them there.
What does the silly old duffer expect you to do, tie them up in your garden so they cant get out.
Cats can scale 10ft walls, stop worrying,
Next time she complains, tell her to write her suggestions down,
and if they work she would make a fortune by patenting the solution and selling it on the open market.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Hi Julie
It would be a shame for your cats to be kept in when they are used to going outside and having the freedom to roam which is what cats do! It isn't illegal for a cat going into someone's garden and there isn't anything you can do to stop them!
Your neighbour can kick up a fuss but at the end of the day you are doing nothing wrong by letting your cats out. If she is that bothered you could suggest to her that she puts down citrus peel/ pepper to discourage the cats but nothing that is harmful to animals or children.
As you said your landlord knows you have them and as everyone knows cats do wonder! Its not you thats causing a problem to your neighbours its your cats which as I said above you can nicely suggest they put something down to discourage them which is fair as at least you are looking to deal with the situation.
I have 3 cats, 2 are too young to go out but the 1 likes a good wonder and we know she goes in other neighbours gardens as they don't poop in their own backyard!
If you act proactive about helping the situation it is less likely to get heated and for your landlord to find out!
Hope this helps!

afraid cats are a bit of a nuiscance to non cat owners , i had a big problem with the local cats coming in my garden , its not just there mess there are other things , cats like to sleep in strange places i.e the roof of my convertible car , leaving a load of fur behind them , also used to jump on our inflatable swimming pool and stick there claws through leaving me to repair it , they also carry fleas and scratch around on things , car paintwork for instance , take your neighbours word for it , your cats are causing distress
my solution was to buy a dog
not sure how you can solve it though , why 5 cats anyway ?
thats practically a herd (or is it pride ? ) cant you get rid of a few ?my favourite food is spare ribs0 -

This made me laugh! Yes 5 cats is a lot to some but why should she have to get rid of a few?! And as for a dog they also cause distress to people, can have fleas, get into strange places if they escape. I have both cats and dogs and they both have bad traits! Think your post is a tad unrealistic as not everyone will have a soft top and an inflatable swimming pool. Birds, squirrels and other furries can also cause damage not just cats.*~* Baby Girl born 29.10.10 - Isobelle Grace *~*

I'm going to go against what most people are saying here. Yes, they're cats, yes they're hard to train, and no it's not illegal having them wander into other people's property. But, they are a bloody nuisance to people who don't like them. 5 cats is ridiculous. Maybe you should have considered the implications that your 2 cats had on neighbours when you got those? To then get another 3 is stupidity.
People should take responsibility for their pets so that it doesn't impact on other people. If that means not getting pets in the first place then so be it. I'm fed up of people that get pets, then moan about completely foreseeable problems when they've got them.

ooh should have asked for that shouldnt i? yes 5 cats is OTT, but before we got one of the cats spayed she had a litter of six kittens, i didnt want to keep them all but , i dont live alone therefore its not just up to me, i'd have been happy with just the 2 but there you go,
managed to rehome three, but that left three, anyways, ive decided they are grounded
i'm going to keep them as inside pets, a family vote., dont want to upset neighbours, so i guess they will have to stay in,0 -

True but she could end up being the neighbour from hell. In extremes neighbours have poisoned cats when they dislike them that much. So ignoring the problem and just thinking she is a silly old woman may only make matters worse.
Communicate with your neighbour tell her what you are doing and make youself approachable.
On to the OP problem one thing you can do is try and make your garden cat friendly. with Cat friendly plants. Outside scratch poles and different levels etc they can play on. If you do a Google search there is a lot you can do to your Garden more cat friendly so they may be more likely to stay near by. It may be also worth looking at extending the hieght of the fencing on that side to discourage them. Your neighbour obviously has a problem with them ignoring it is only asking for more problems in the long run.Bigblackdog wrote:thats practically a herd (or is it pride ? ) cant you get rid of a few ?0 -
how do you cope with all the litter bob?
btw cat poo dosent bother me at all just weighs a ton in the rubbish bin0 -

Idiots.
Proc, as a cat owner (and dogs and horses) myself I think it is a little unfair branding them/ me/ us idiots. The OP has come on here for advice and for the most part people have given her ways of being able to accomodate the situation and her neighbours which can hopefully be resolved amicably but advising that maybe she shouldnt of had cats in the first place is just an unhelpful comment.
Yes, not everyone likes cats in their garden and cats in general but unfortunately a lot of people have cats and that will never change. There will always be neighbours who don't appreciate cats in their gardens and there are ways if safely discouraging both from the owner and the neighbours.*~* Baby Girl born 29.10.10 - Isobelle Grace *~*
