So we can be enticed into getting into more and more debt and earning banks lots of money in 'interest' and fees when we graduate.
Oh, I didn't mean to click 'thanks' by the way. There should really be more distance from the 'quote' button.
On my uni card it has the NUS logo at the bottom and I'm still getting discounts... haven't forked out for an NUS Extra yet. Don't think I will if my uni card will do.0 -

Really dont understand that comment mate, what get into debt at the pub ,kebab shop or night club or even a barbers?
I can understand banks and such like offering incentives to students to try and keep their business when they graduate and get a job but why they give discounts at all the other shops beats me.
Here in coventry you cant even get into loads of clubs and pubs during term time as NUS ONLY (good job i've got a mate at the uni that gets me a NUS card) so if you are local and pay council tax etc you cant get in never mind a discount. But when the students are off for the summer EVERYONE is welcome in the pubs and clubs.
Got it cushy have students.0 -
Paying council tax doesn't entitle you entrance to a pub. You pay council tax for your property - this (supposedly) pays for refuse collection etc etc, and the pub will pay it's own council tax (most likely at a higher rate than you) out of the profits it makes.ianian99 wrote:Here in coventry you cant even get into loads of clubs and pubs during term time as NUS ONLY (good job i've got a mate at the uni that gets me a NUS card) so if you are local and pay council tax etc you cant get in never mind a discount. And what do you expect if you have hundreds of thousands of students when there's bars near-by?
You may even have stumpled upon a brilliant business idea for your area - a non-student bar!0 -

my point about the council tax is that locals put a hell of a lot more into their community finacially than students do but cant get into any pubs or clubs.
As for non-student bars well that wouldn't happen would it, can you imagine the stink that the uni or student union would kick up if someone opened a pub and put a sign up saying NO STUDENTS?
So apart from the banks etc giving you offers and discount etc whilst you are student can anyone answer why ALL the local shops do it?
I totally understand why pubs and clubs do student only nights but i think it is unfair to the locals and reckon its pure discrimination.0 -
i think there is an arguement that students spend half the year at university and half 'at home', where their parents will be contributing to council tax for that property. i was at uni for 24 weeks a year so spent the majority of the year at my parents house where council tax was paid. it's not great for the university towns, granted, but there is some logic to it.ianian99 wrote:my point about the council tax is that locals put a hell of a lot more into their community finacially than students do but cant get into any pubs or clubs.
in terms of getting into pubs, in any university location i've been in there have been very clear rules on which pubs are for 'town' and which are for 'gown'. there are usually lots of student pubs but also ones which don't have many students who go there. one student night a week in a club isn't really stopping anyone else going the other 6 nights - especially since student nights are normally week nights when most people with 'proper jobs' aren't out until all hours!:happyhear0 -
our uni "trialled" the NUS extra card last year & we all thought it wasnt worth it! This year........... we have no choice other than to get it! No "normal" NUS card now just the £10 one. Most shops you take it into dont even think its an NUS card of any sort as it looks so different & they have all got pictures of 2004s "normal" card to show what an NUS card looks like, def more hassle than they are worth!0

Just what everyone needs.... a person who hates students having their own nights joining them thanks to "a mate at the uni that gets me a NUS card" (wouldnt like to be that person when he gets caught as im sure your not the only one getting your non-student NUS). Both areas ive been to uni didnt really have "NUS only" nights - just made it cheaper on certain nights if you were a student.. god only knows the government like to get you into debt as soon as you sign up so why not have others giving a little helping hand?? Being a student has to have some novelty value somewhere!0

BSM accepted my standard University ID card (which states NUS) for a £2 per hour discount. I have, however, signed up for the NUS extra card, although they seem to be taking their sweet time with it.0

what are you talking about? Who hates students? Certainly not me mate, i've been having the student life for the last 15 years without going to uni and doing the studying( apart from some mini modules I did to get my NUs card in the past) also nothing will happen to the person that gets me the NUS as its all above board via the student union and I get it as we promote several STUDENT NIGHTS in local pubs and clubs.
If you actually read my post i was asking why students get discounts everywhere and locals dont.
Does anyone actually know?0 -
Maybe because students are *STUDYING* and although they *MAY* be *WORKING* the chances that they are doing a *FULL-TIME JOB* and *STUDYING* are very slim.ianian99 wrote:If you actually read my post i was asking why students get discounts everywhere and locals dont.

*STUDENTS* also have expenses people in full time work may not have, such as books (costing as much as £40 each - or much much more for specialised courses), transport costs - and students living in halls are pretty much ripped off by halls.
Students are also *BORROWING MONEY TO STUDY* and this is not out of their own choice. If you, on the other hand decide you can't hack a second hand car, want to buy a house and so on, then that is your choice to go and get a loan.
On the whole chances are people who are not students are better off than people who are. In my opinion that justifies the extremely small discounts (nearly always less than the cost of VAT) that students are offered.0
