Tried that at the cash desk at Newcastle club - Digital.. to which i got hit with... thats a Library card, you need an NUS card for a discount.
I felt this big (holds index finger and thumb quite close together in a pinching motion.
Gonna chase my uni tomorrow and get this sorted, once and for all...Had to pull out of the "Money for Nothing Challenge" workload has just proved to much...

Sorry to hear about your card being rejected. Unfortunately, I think your uni will charge £10 for the privelege. Especially as the university union gets some money out of the deal.SimonDance wrote:Gonna chase my uni tomorrow and get this sorted, once and for all...0 -
I wrote this elsewhere a while ago...The basic idea of the NUS Extra card is to bring some money into the NUS. From the projections I heard a couple of years ago, if they didn't do this they would be bankrupt within about 10 years. Whatever you views of the NUS as a campaigning organisation (i'm certainly not convinced), they are a broadly good thing.
The aims at the start of the project was to introduce many more discounts to the card, something that they appear to have done, although they haven't managed to get a supermarket onboard as they had hoped.
We were initially assured that a basic NUS card would remain to act as membership of the NUS and the particular union; for the purposes of admission and voting in union elections. The basic card would be similar to the current NUS card but without any discounts.
It now seems that unions have been given the choice about which card to sign up to and most seem to have chosen the pay route - which is probably sensible for both sides. Particular unions are likely to offer discounts to NusExtra holders for things like their own club nights etc.0 -
why do students get discounts on everything anyway0

It's free for the freshers in our uni, the rest of us pay £10 if we want the extra card. I work at my SU so won't need it to get in anyway.Little man arrived 13 Dec 20120

And often it's only 10% (£1 in every £10) and it's just an attempt to build customer loyalty in a hope they will shop there the rest of their lives. Also it tends to be in shops that sell more expensive items so sometimes it is cheaper to go elsewhere anyway.melancholly wrote:we're just special

I'm actually really annoyed by both Subway and my SU.
I tried to get a Student discount in subway, but was refused saying it had to be the extra card. Quite !!!!ed off that this now takes away from the fact its meant to be a discount for students not a discount for people with a shiny card. i still went and got a £10 NUS extra card... and subway refused it saying it wasn't the silver NUS extra but the red non NUS one? !!!!!! they are on about I dont know. I'm actually going to shout at my SU and the subway manager! Because i bought the card on word of the subway staff.... and the SU confirmed what the subway staff had said.~Diminutive0 -
Well, we're signed up to Extra but still have Democracy cards to issue to those who don't buy an Extra card. Every HE student is automatically a member of their SU (unless they specifically opt out) and is entitled to a means of identifying themselves as a member of that SU in order to vote and access other services. If your SU and university are failing to give this, they are likely to be in breach of their own Regulations, so kick up a fuss! (But please don't shout at SU staff - we don't get paid much and have nothing to do with policy decisions such as signing up to Extra!).Mich wrote:It now seems that unions have been given the choice about which card to sign up to and most seem to have chosen the pay route - which is probably sensible for both sides. Mel.Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.
