Royal mail help

  • Lets hope so, royal mail is a great place to work for, but theres always one or two in your office who seem to let down the rest. Totally agree about the annual leave. In our office, they've just been working on doing all the walks so they are equalized up with a pc working out the optimized route, unfortunately - the pc obviously doesnt walk up and down the roads. The routes have loads of dead walking and regularly criss-cross other walks. They are cutting 65 hours from us to make some savings - or trying.

I believe this is going to get rolled out countrywide so beware - it's coming to an office near you. Sometimes it just aint broke......

We're pretty lucky were we are with 50 of us covering the town - usual problems at our office include - van drivers refusing to take packets from posties who cant fit them in pouches, the odd one or two cutting off to time, people taking the p*** on sickness. All of which impacts on the rest of us.

PS. I havent seen any of this productivity savings going into pay packets, yet we were supposed to get possibly 4 small pay rises since april. Anybody know whats going on there then?

Sorry if we've gone off topic a bit, but its very interesting getting other posties views on whats wrong with Royal Mail and whats good about it.

In our office to save the hours, management have taken it upon themselves that when a full time position becomes vacant, it remains vacant and the duty is to be covered by a part timer, therefore saving 10 hours per duty, but putting extra stress upon the others.
Productivity bonus, if remember the brief, is based upon the area, not the individual office, therefore set at an unrealistic figure, ie your office could be performing at 100% but the next DO could be at 50%, therefore affecting the overall figures. Sorting offices are also included in the areas set and lets face it, they are cr*p. I know, I worked overtime at ours and the only work done was by the staff working overtime.
It also makes me laugh that in WTL we are told that we are handling 20% less mail than we were last year, whilst in reality we are delivering 40% more. The handling refers to the processing side, but Royal Mail will not state that. Until collection, processing and delivery are all accepted as seperate identities, by our senior management, we will be tarred by the same brush, and regardless to whatever the media says, we are the best delivery network anywhere in the world, and with our solid delivery staff will remain as such, despite the odd hiccup.
To all non Royal Mail MSErs, please remember that for every one rouge postie, there are a hundred dedicated staff who will do their utmost to deliver your mail safely, and within a reasonable time.

  • Our delivery office was one of the pilot offices that used the new system to equalize the walks via a PC programme. It worked to some extent until some loud mouths bleetted that their walks were too long and got some took off, guess what, they finish before everyone else now.

We've got to loose 5% of costs every year, only costs are staff! Work out how long before there will be one bloke opening up and taking all the walks out :D

Yeh, all vacant full time vacancies are being replaced by 20 hour staff, whilst full time staff have prep their walks before they roll in at 9.00am

Being a relief, I see both sides: Van driving and Walks.........
you do get some posties trying to leave packets that they could take, ie: right near a pouch box! Or they know the person is always out and don't want to go to a PO with packet.
Saying that Drivers try to not take flyers etc if the can get away when a newbie is on the walk.
    Human nature I think:D
Management are no help, as long as the delivery office is clear of mail, they don't care how it goes!

Maybe I should set up a forum to sound off about the Royal Mail ;)

Again sorry if we've gone off topic :D

Our mail load has been an absolute nightmare last few weeks, i went mad today and smashed up a frame as some one had left me 21 parcels ready for monday

Ouch! 21 parcels! Thats bad. Saturdays in our office we get to leave the mailsort, but no real benefit as it has to go on Monday.
The Pegasus system was originally used in our office 4 years ago and was designed to set up walks using an average walking speed of 4 mph. Needless to say the idea was scrapped as instead of reducing 59 walks down to 47, they went up. Walking at 4 mph is a luxury RM cannot afford.

    Maybe not sound off but:

I think thats a good idea as different things seem to be happening in different offices up and down the country, it would be good to see what things they are trying to implement in everones area - what new things people are hearing about royal mail, bonuses - door to door etc etc - and we've gone completely off topic now.

please send a pm if you do this.
