[1] It got one of mine right (buying in 2000), and
[2] another one bought in 1996 a mile up the road was right too.

However, I then tested [1] against the last sold price (2007) and it put it into a higher bracket.

I think the areas are too broad really. It needs more rocket science.

Had a play with calculator and it seems to work fine.

However, not sure I agree with the following logic....

    "Find the
most recent sale price of a similar property to yours in your street. Now note down both the PRICE and the DATE OF SALE and use it to work out what your house would've been worth in 1991 as that’s what council tax bands depend on. "

Unless I am missing something, the sale price that will yield the most accurate result would be one as close to 1991 as possible, rather than the most recent one.
Good point Paul. Actually, I don't think the most recent valuation of anything like in the street is going to be any more accurate then the earliest known price and date after '91 of the property in question.

  • Not really accurate for me but Im in Wales so that's maybe something to do with it. House we sold at the beginning of the year says that in 2003 it should be a band E when in fact its a band B and was upgraded from a band A to a B in 2003, so its really wrong. Its telling me that the house I bought at the beginning of the year should also be and E but its a D and so is everyone else in the street. So wrong again.

Find your house price in 1991

Which co-incidently, will also be your house price in 2012....
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

Got it wrong for me. I'm band C, like all the unextended houses in my street, but it put me near the top of band D.

It put us in band E, but we actually pay band D

    That's for a London house...
    :A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%
  • Spot on for mine
  • I thought I would mention that here in Northern Ireland we don't pay council tax we pay Rates. Which my Husband tells me is babsically the same thing under a different name..... Anyway, I'm not sure if if it's worked out differently or the same over here as I don't think we are 'banded'. So it may not work for NI. Also our house along with huge amount of others wasn't even built in 1991 so not sure if works in that sense.
