Thinking about buying a vectra

Hi folks.
I have a budget of around £3000 and I am considering a Vectra C,around a 53 plate or there abouts
Can anyone help re things to check/avoid.

Vague sort of question, but any advice would be greatly received.

Thanks

  • Avoid the 2.0/2.2 diesel ones, unless you fancy fuel pump and turbo problems.

The 1.8 petrols are nice enough. Elegance spec is nice at that age.
  • A recent straw poll amoungst some friends of mine placed modern Vauxhalls at the bottom of our list for long term reliability, and persistant faults. They also had the dubious accolade of the "most towed in car," with the DisAstra just nudging a win.

That said, as above the petrol engine is quite long in the tooth now, and time proven.

With that money you should be aiming for a nice 55 plate in a decent colour. They are well proven and there are lots about, so be fussy.

I have had a few on hire in the past, and without doubt they are the worst cars I have ever driven. Zero feedback from the front wheels, uncomfortable, ugly and they are the good points!
  • Earlier ones were soggy at the back end for some reason.

For 3000 I'd be lookin at Mondeo's or Focuseseseses.

Have had and still currently have Vectra C's, both 1.8 petrols.

Slightly underpowered in the estate version but economical and very reliable.

Even What Car, who never really liked them new, now vote them as best secondhand estate.

Test drive a couple and see if that's what you really want. Up there ^^^ someone says the diesels are pants... They're not! They just need maintaining on the button. We have had them running past 200,000 miles by abiding to the vauxhall's service recommendations.

Not a great fan of the Focus,a mondeo would not be a bad option, must have a look and see what is out there.
