Laptop not loading up properly

Hi guys my partners son is having big problems with his laptop and wondered if anyone could help please. It starts up ok then when it is on the "Windows is loading" screen its ok but then it just goes on to show a big screenshot of the four big coloured Microsoft tiles. This stays there for around 20 minutes and then goes onto his desktop but most of the icons are missing and you cant really get on anything at all. Ive tried running it in safe mode and run a Spybot scan and a Malwarebytes quick scan ( cant update either in safe mode ) but its made no difference. Any ideas what it could be guys and how to fix it ? Any help gratefuly received in not too complicated terms please .

Go into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
Download HostsXpert
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Hoster-Download-27041.html
and then follow the below steps.
* Unzip HostsXpert.zip
* It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
* Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
* click the Make Writeable? button.
* click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
* Click the X to exit the program

Now try updating malwarebytes in safe mode with networking and running a QUICK scan if it does. Assuming it does please post the WHOLE of that log, then run a FULL scan with it:idea:0 -

Whos the internet provider? Are you on cable or adsl (Phoneline)
Do you have a setup disc to allow to reconnect?
Do you use a router? Are you wired or wireless?:idea:0 -
Hi Rik
BT is the internet provider on adsl
I do have a set up disc.
We have a BT Homehub which we use for the main PC which is wired ( which all of a sudden yesterday refused to connect using any browser ! Another thread me thinks ) but the laptop is connected wireless.
When i tried before i was in the same room as the hub to get the strongest signal but no joy !0 -
