Loving this thread although its very addictive lol. Can anybody suggest which type of paint would be best on a nest of tables I have won on ebay? They look like they could be yew or something with a slight sheen to them and are solid wood. TIA.0

I would use gloss or eggshell paint as they are most durable. To make the paint last longer you need to prep them really well, ie sand before painting, then prime/undercoat, then 2 coats gloss. Use a fine sandpaper between each coat (and wipe well with a damp cloth to remove the dust) in order to give a good 'key' for the next coat to stick. Also, allow hem to dry really well between coats.
[Emulsion] isn't generally as hardwearing as eggshell but I have had some success with a pair of stools I painted up, by coating them with some leftover 'diamond strength' floorboard varnish that I had in the shed.
Sorry to quote myself but the same advice would apply to the tables.0 -
Annie C thanks so much for the oilcloth step stool link and idea, loving that! I have a boring stool and would love to do this...MFW #185

Hya all - lovely work again, and great ideas.
Not done much painting for a while as my "painting shed" is crammed full of stuff and needs sorting and tidying, but been busy with other things.
Thought you might like to know Homeba$e are having a 20% off decorating and gardening stuff next Friday and Saturday (18th & 19th). This on top of their existing offers, including the 3for2 dulux, crown & LA paint deals. F&B also has 20% off...so worth a look methinks!! Want to repaint our bedroom and the conservatory...so a good reason for deciding exactly what colours to get!
Have a great weekend...off out into the garden before it rains.

An outdoor question from me.
I fancy painting two benches either cream/white or a pastel shade.
Does anyone have any idea what I could use?I'm wondering if eggshell paint with a coat of varnish would work.0 -

Last year I wanted to do a similar project and had great success with a paint from either Ronseal or Cuprinol. Sorry can't remember the name but it was def one of those. They did some gorgeous very sc shades and I am really pleased with the finish. Gave my old tatty benches a lovely new lease of life!0 -

I don't think it would as I did a small outside project and coated with waterproofing varnish they use on yachts and it only lasted one season. It's best to use a proper outdoor paint.

BTW - the paint I have mentioned in my previous post has stood the winter really well and with a wash down the benches look fine0
