It's one of the sponge ones not the fluffy ones IYSWIM. Similar texture to a make up sponge!

    dressingtable-300x185.jpg

sorry i had started to paint the draws before i remembered to take a photo.

anyway i got this free today and had planed to paint it white put new handles on the draws and put it in my dd room as a dressing tabel with a mirror above it or if i can pick up a proper dressing table mirror, put one of those on it.

but i got it in and my dh says its a desk and i say yes but it will be a dressing table and he says its a desk.

so am i kidding myself that it could be a dressing table once painted.

    its 30inch high x 42inch wide

hmo - you can use furniture how ever you want, don't listen to your DH (on this point at least!! :rotfl:). Looks like you will have a great dressing table there once you have finished! :D:D My kitchen island unit was once a wash stand for a bedroom...but it is wonderful in the kitchen, with some added bits of wood to make it high enough!

As for handles, Homeb@ase usually have a good range (you could try b&q too). Try your local 2nd-hand furniture shops or reclamation yards...sometimes they have a pile of spare ones.

Good luck with your handle-hunt x

No, I think once it's painted up, with a mirror on the top it will be beautiful and your DD will love it!

My DD has a desk that she uses as a dressing table, I got her a triple mirror to put on the top. The drawers are great for storing girlie bits and pieces.

The dressing table you've got looks similar to this, look at the price!

thanks i dont normally listen to him:)

he has been in a bad mood all day so i suppose its only to be expected.

i think it will be ok, ive found these handles, what do you think they appear to be the same size as the ones on it now and the holes look to be in the same place.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-x-Chrome-Handles-Draw-Cupboard-Handles-etc-/330377595169?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Cabinets_Cupboards_MJ&hash=item4cec0a0921

    is this a good price.

when i painted my Yew desk recently i knew all along i was going to put an oak top on it, this one i was just going to paint white all over and i will use a roller on my top coat to try and get a good finish, or can anyone suggest anything else.

the draw fronts have had three coats already and the desk has been done twice we have underfloor heating so paint dries fast in here, but it appears to be yellowing, is it because its dark wood.

i am using the same cabinet paint i used as primer on my other desk so i dont think its the paint.

will this stop the more coats i do?

i will use F&B for my top coats.

hmo re handles I always use ebay - did my whole shabby chic kitchen look with them (click my profile to see my blog) and it saved a fortune. Plus recently I got these for our current make over tv cabinet (which I am just finishing) and will pop some pics up soon:

They have gone down slightly in price since I bought them, typical eh!

I have the Ikea stool people have mentioned and because of this thread I was inspired to buy this to cover it with:

So thank you for the inspiration and thanks Keiss for the heads up re: Homebase this weekend too! We have a £10 voucher to use and need some F&B and maybe some Cuprinol if folks recommend it for outside painting. We have 2 small wooden fences and a bench that would benefit.

eager learner, thanks i have bought the handles and had an email saying they have been posted, so by the time i finish the desk they should be here.

i am wondering if i should chop a few inches off each leg of the desk to make it lower.

my only worry is if i get it wrong and then it wobbles.

has anyone done this on a project.

i am going to try and do two more undercoates tonight in between food shopping and running around to brownies.

it is yellowing and i dont know why it didnt happen with this paint before.
