I think most people use either oil or water based eggshell as it doesn't yellow like gloss does. Some people varnish with a clear matt varnish afterwards to stop it from chipping. well... I've started my first project!
I have an old chest of drawers and book case that I'm painting and its going well!
Now that I'm inspired though and feeling creative I was thinking of covering the front of the drawers and the shelves with pretty paper.
I'm not sure whether to go for wrapping paper or wall paper. Which is best?
Also do I need to varnish it once I'm finshed?
Thanks xx0 -

I don't know if it helps anyone but I was in B&Q yesterday and they had 2.5L Crown "Le Petit Palais" matt emulsion on offer for £10 a tin, apparently it's on offer until 11th March. I got myself a tin of "thatched cottage" to finish my kitchen.

I use eggshell and love the finish. No need to coat eggshell with varnish as it is very durable (like gloss paint). It is emulsion, I think that people coat with varnish afterwards.0 -

I would use gloss or eggshell paint as they are most durable. To make the paint last longer you need to prep them really well, ie sand before painting, then prime/undercoat, then 2 coats gloss. Use a fine sandpaper between each coat (and wipe well with a damp cloth to remove the dust) in order to give a good 'key' for the next coat to stick. Also, allow hem to dry really well between coats.
If you can't find small enough pots of pastel eggshell then you may have to use emulsion and paint varnish over the top. This isn't generally as hardwearing as eggshell but I have had some success with a pair of stools I painted up, by coating them with some leftover 'diamond strength' floorboard varnish that I had in the shed.
The table top is the part that will take the most battering from the girls, I expect and I wonder if you might want to cover it with pretty oilcloth/pvc table cloth. You can staple it securely underneath and then simply change it when it gets too grubby.
A lovely example here: http://tinkeredtreasures.blogspot.com/2010/04/oilcloth-is-in-and-on.html though for kiddies, I would staple the cloth on and not just tape it as he has. You can get staple guns in places like £land.
And a how-to here which I found when looking for ideas to decorate my Ikea step stool:
