Im gutted, i was all excited for painting my kitchen cupboards and today i found out im not allowed :( Its stipulated in my tennancy agreement!

Have you actually asked your landlord? Depending how old the kitchen is and whether they were planning to replace it before the next tenancy, they might be ok with it. Always worth a try!

But if not, there's ways of decorating and prettifying without touching the fixtures, fittings and walls. Furniture and soft furnishings can make a huge difference :)

ETA: The reason I say 'ask the landlord' is because my tenants have the 'no decorating' clause in their agreement, but if they turned round and said they wanted to decorate, within reason I'd have no trouble letting them if it meant they were likely to stay in my property longer. The place will need re-decorating due to wear and tear anyway. Then again, I'd already painted the kitchen cupboards there :D
  • i am a shabby chic virgin:D and i have an ugly dark brown high cabinet..bit like a dresser but not as wide....i hate it with a passion but as OH got it for next to nothing he loves it!!
so i've decided it would look ok if i painted it a white/cream..replaced the door handles and replaced the leaded glass with fabric:D

i've been reading the posts on this thread, but just wanted to check what KIND of paint to use? i.e. matt/emulsion/gloss/eggshell etc?....i've not painted furniture for about 20 years so bit out of date!

    thanks:)

on further inspection i see the glass is fixed in (i thought it would be easy to take out)??:( i dont like the glass on the top cupboard bit as it is leaded...any ideas what i could do?

i was going to replace the glass with some gorgeous fabric? maybe i could still do this by gluing it on?

i have seen some gorgeous cabinet knobs at an online shop called bombayduck....just need some good weather and paint!!
    totally a tog!:D

Lol, just reread my post from way back! Still haven't got round to varnishing or distressing and the leaded glass remains. I am still planning to block up the glass section and paper over but this is to hide the toiletries stash more than anything else.

Shirl - how is your hallway coming along, did you sort the blinds out?

I painted ds's bedroom furniture, I bought a whole bedroom suite on ebay for £48 which was pine, rubbed it down, painted the doors and sides etc cream (using a satin cream wood paint) and waxed the tops of the dresser, bedside table, wardrobe and knobs - then sold the bed on as we didn't need that :D So the whole bedroom suite including paint cost me £30 - Bargain!

Re the Argos bedding, ayone any idea on the thread count? I recently purchased some from TU but it feels really cheap and hard, but stupidly didn't look at the thread count before I bought it....

With the 'hard' bedding (possibly at Argos and TU) the issue may not be so much the thread count but that it is polycotton which isn't as soft as cotton, although it is very easy to care for. Home Bargains and TK Maxx often have nice shabby bedding in 100% cotton :)

Im in a council house so im thinking they will be a little less leniant then a 'normal' landlord, They are currently spending thousands doing houses up and most are getting new kitcehns/bathrooms etc. Mine qualified for the bathroom but not the kitchen as it was less then 10 years old! Despite 3 of the cupboards having major water damage from a burst pipe 2 years ago...!

I wonder if i can just 'do them up' a bit with some of that fablon stuff instead

Silly question but have you washed it yet? Lots of bedding have starch put in to give a nice crisp finish and make it easier to make and pack. Washing should get rid of the starch and make it softer (I found this with the TU dinosaur bedding I bought DS)

:o Don't ask. I haven't even got a carpet on the stairs at the moment. Until I get the carpet I can't choose the blind fabric. I keep putting off going back and looking at carpet samples. I used to enjoy that kind of thing but now it's a chore.

On a more positive note I won an old fashioned TV cabinet on Ebay for 92p the other day. It's one of the ones that has the doors to shut the TV away. I'm going to paint it and ask the OH to stick a back on it and maybe a shelf and use it to keep some of my fabric in.
