Thought i would try to revamp an old set of nesting tables. dark wood with some type of varnish maybe on the top coat. Went to diy and looked at all the varieties of paints and am confused. man there said i would have to use nitromoor or similar to get off all varnish first whereas I am sure I read here that someone just sandpapered then used a wood primer/undercoat then painted? Also is there a diff between primer and undercoat? I know the forst is for bare wood but for what we are talking here is there a diff?
thanks0 -
I'd only use nitromors if I wanted to strip back to bare wood and leave it bare. I have done a few bits now and depending on how lazy I am feeling I have done different things.
So on a lazy day I would wash the item down and paint BIN primer all over and then the eggshell, I have done this method straight over varnished wood. I have to say that BIN is really good. I have also used International wipe on wipe off multi surface primer intead of BIN and found that good as well, although the downside is the INternational MSP is clear so you need more coats of your eggshell.
If I was feeling energetic I would wash, sand (not too much mind!), use some easysand too, BIN and eggshell.
Have not yet got as far as the varnish stage on any projects but everything I have done has seemed just as durable as the next so far.0 -
thanks for that. well there is a nest of tables-99p from ebay so could try a couple of methods and see what happens.0

Hi everyone thanks for reinspiring me, haven't done much since November. You see, it looks as if we have a little EL on the way, so my energy has been elsewhere
Now I am 4 months my energy is coming back :jso today I have sanded down the nasty orange pine tv unit we bought 2nd hand a year ago and primed it, it's now awaiting F&B TLC with danish oil finish on top. Will hopefully post some before and after pics tomorrow!MFW #185

Ive been following the posts on here as I am keen to restore some old pieces for cottage we are renovating --not yet made a start with furniture!
Wondered if anyone had tried "Annie Sloan" paints and technique.?
Seems you dont need paint strip/rub down wooden articles (unless melamine/shiny) advice is to paint with her chalk based paint, then wax, prices dont seem to be as expensive as F&B paint.

Ahh congratulations!0 -
Kazz that looks great - we have artex on ours so no chance of lovely wallpaper of any sort... I pretend it looks rustic!
Arroli sorry no haven't tried that paint, will keep an eye out for it though. I imagine for now I will use up the F&B and then move to diy brands if I can as it's so pricey...
Vicki thank you - we're still in disbelief even though we found out mid November ha ha... an adjustment process, as it's our first baby! So of course I want nursery to be shabby chic too, got a few matching items but now just need some furniture to do up.MFW #185
