  • Can i ask some advice please :) Ive been looking at your pics on here and wow! everything i have seen i have absolutely loved! Now i have never done anything up before in my life, but i have a plan to decorate my house from top to bottom....and im skint lol. Now i would love to paint my kitchen cupboards but they are that plasticy laminatey type stuff lol....sorry my descriptions leave a lot to be desired lol. i'm hoping someone will know what i mean...question is am i able to paint over it?

Also I have a toy box i have been given, its the sort where the lid lifts up and there is a back bit to it, like a seat. I would love to turn this into a seat, complete with cushions and use it to store my towels on my landing....it has stickers stuck all over it and is painted a dark purple colour at the min....will it need sanding down before i can paint over it, or would i need to strip the current paint off it first?

And lastly i have a table i hate, its black metal legs with a orangy type wood on top with two large pains of glass in it....can i just spray pain the legs and paint the top then varnish it?

Im sorry for al the questions, hope you dont mind but as you can tell im clueless lol....oh one last thing, would you reccomend using a certain type of paint, or is normal emulsion ok???

    Thank you so much

Ok, your kitchen cupboards sound like melamine. You need to give them a good wash (not that I'm suggesting your cupboards are dirty!) but just to remove any grease. Probably best with sugar soap. Then after they are dry give them a light sand . Then use a primer, look for one that says 'kitchen cupboards, or melamine' . Probably go for two coats of primer. The you can either use normal gloss paint of specialised cupboard paint or spray paint. If using spray paint its best to take the cupboards off the hinges and do outside. If using normal gloss a roller will probably give you the best effect.

The toy box - you need to get the stickers off as you will see them through any new paint. I'd probably lightly sand it first. If you want it a light colour it will take a good few coats.

Is the table waxed/varnished on top? if so again you'll have to sand it first. But yes sounds like a plan.

If you use emulsion you would probably need to varnish it otherwise it would chip. Gloss or satinwood (non shiny gloss) would be better.

i bought some great paint recently i did post about it probably in this thread somewhere, i dont have the exact make in front of me at the moment, but its called cabinet trim paint.

its a primer and top coat all in one and covers great and gives a nice finish.

and it sticks to all surfaces i did the chair with it here
    chair_desk.jpg

the desk was done with farrow and ball and you cannot tell any difference and this paint was only about £8.50.
    F&B is about £17.50

and i didnt sand at all, i did about 6 coates but it was worth it.

i am doing a pine table and chairs at the moment one of those laquered pine type i will post a photo as soon as i can
  • Thank you so much thats great!! Will go searching for supplies this weekend :)

I love that chair...and desk! I only hope my efforts will look half as nice lol

I had horrible cheapy melamine kitchen cupboards that I hated so I gave them a good wash and sand down then painted them with Crown Period eggshell paint. I didn't bother using a primer first because I'm lazy. :o Personally I'm not keen on gloss paint for cupboards I prefer a midsheen finish which is why I chose the eggshell.

If you go back a page or two, I've linked to a product that I used to prime melamine kitchen units before painting them.

I would never use gloss on kitchen cupboards - I much prefer eggshell finish. I find Farrow and Ball paint well worth spending the extra money (available in Homebase - I did my entire kitchen with one small tin). I painted the eggshell on with a brush then used a mini sponge roller over the top to give a smooth finish. Careful not to put too much paint on at once or you'll get drips; you're better to do two fine coats than one thick.

    Hope that helps :)

I went to Poundland and bought some of the car spray paint, they only had white. It's great. I sprayed a glass vase and two coat hooks (also purchased in poundland - originally untreated wood with brass hooks) and am really pleased with the results. I wasn't sure if it would work on glass but it worked a treat. Unfortunately I managed to drop said vase whilst I was holding in admiring my handiwork :(

Aww what a shame you dropped your vase. It's good to know though, because I bought two glass candlesticks that I'm not keen on but think they'd be fabulous painted white. I'll have to take a trip to my local pound shop!
