If I'm not too late, and you have an Aldi close by, our Aldi's had mini ones around this size for £3.99, so it may be worth a look.
  • I hope you don't mind if I ask a very basic question. I'd really, really like a painted farmhouse table & chairs but can't afford anything I've seen on ebay. I'm seriously thinking about buying an un painted table & chairs and doing it myself but have no idea what to do. Can anyone point me in the direction of idiot-proof instructions, please? Is it possible to get good results without an electric sander? And I how do I work out how much it's likely to cost me for paint etc?

    Many thanks in advance.

First give what ever you buy a good clean. Then either use Chalk paint and wax. Or use something like Zinsser 123 and then any satinwood or gloss paint.
I learnt lots reading this thread.

you can paint anything! I painted my pine kitchen table with chalk paint then waxed it. Actually I didn't do the top as it has a table cloth on it anyway. I have 2 chairs that are really distressed in layers of old gloss paint that I bought for 50p each in a junk shop. I have other chairs bought for £5. Mismatched is cute!

Costs - getting a table from somewhere... freecycle/bootfairs/charity shops, relatives. I got a big chunky table in my Micra as it's base undoes from it's top.

if you have waxed pine, you'll need expensive knot blocking paint ( £20 max), if it's just old 80's varnished pine you wouldn't.

If you chalk paint, the plaster of paris is about £6 in The Range and will last for years/many projects.

Emulsion paint .. if you don't have a stash of half empty tins, buy some at Wilkos, - maybe £10?.

Wax or Varnish - another £8 ish. and loads left over.

    A brush - £2 or £3 at Wilkos.

    have fun

Could I please ask for opinions on this chair as I'm racking my brains with what colour to do it. I've done a rough coat of Annie Sloan Paris Grey but wasn't sure it was working with the fabric colour. Then I started doing a Farrow and Ball off white but didn't like it. Thinking of darker grey now. I would get it re-upholstered but I've had a quote of £150! I would like to sell it on if I can so something neutral that would appeal to the wider audience would be preferred. What do you all think of dark grey?

I did one of these about a year ago, as you can see in the link I used ASCP in French Linen. I re-upholstered it myself and I sold it on when finished :)
