when I decoupage wooden boxes, I usually use PVA glue, then varnish next week.
Depending on the wood, it might be worth painting them first, even if only primer, as the colours will be truer and it may stick better. Wood can be cussed splintery absorbent stuff sometimes.
this lady did something similar -http://beadyizeme.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/decoupaged-wooden-box.html
and saw this - ingredients are Handmade itemMaterials: Wooden box, Sealant, Varnish, Superman comic0 -

lurking on here while I wait for some paint to dry ... I bought a cheap pine chest of drawers (£10) the other week, but it had lost its back and was very wobbly. Hubs has just cut some left over laminate flooring boards to fit it and nailed it on, so it's quite sturdy now. We put the boards on back to front, so the grooves between the planks look like tongue and groove wood now I've painted it with chalk paint. Now I know it's only the back but I just had to paint it! Tomorrow I'll probably start on the front.0

Our living room although it looks nice and has done for the last 10 years is a bit dated.
We have a real oak veneered wall unit with display cabinets and a sideboard to match.
I would quite happily dispose of it and get something more modern looking but DH is resisting.
After seeing this, I am wondering about maybe taking off the frilly bits and replacing with more clean cut lines and perhaps even replacing the doors and handles then painting it a light colour.
DH is very good at DIY so I am sure he could do it, but just wondered if anyone else has done anything similar.
The bonus with using what we have is apart from the expense we can keep the amount of cupboard space we have already.0 -
I took all the coving off my kitchen units, top and under the cupboards and it improved it hugely. Never got round to painting them though.
I'll paint anything that bugs me, and if you might get rid of it anyway you could give it a go. Veneer can be a beast to paint if it's old and cruddy, but new it should be ok, and oak is usually very friendly. You could have a browse on pinterest see what others have done.
Unlike waxed pine which I've just put a load of stain blocker paint on the knots on the chest of drawers pending a paint up tomorrow.0 -
I've finally got around to my first go at decoupage. These steps were just plain untreated wood from Ikea. I gave them a couple of coats of cheap white emulsion as an undercoat, then I used my kitchen feature wall paint to give a final coat. I found the sunflower pics online and then printed, cut out and stuck on (hadn't anticipated how awkward it would be to stick them on, they ruffled up a lot). I now need to give a final coat of varnish, which I'll get at the weekend. I'm pleased with them anyway. Thanks to all the great advice and ideas from this thread.0

Hello, I want a retro/shabby chic style kitchen bin-at least 30L capacity and must have a lid to stop my dogs raiding it. I quite like the traditional style 'dustbin' ones, but they cost a fortune ready painted, and looking at buying basic dustbins to paint myself, they all seem to be massive-about 90L.
Has anyone seen smaller basic metal dustbins (not the tiny ones), or does anyone have upcycling ideas for making a new and unique kitchen bin?
Many thanks,
Dawn.
Just browsing and wondered if this was any good?

I have the galvanised steel version which you could paint with Hammerite if you wanted to change the colour which I'm pretty and have had it for many years in my kids rooms. They started off as laundry bins but are now used for rubbish.
I use standard black bin bags which fit perfectly and the rim in wide enough to fit a standard empty 4/6 pint milk carton without filling the bin either. The same can't be said for my Brabantia.
Hope this helps.0 -

Hi. Cacran Yes this is what I bought and used. It's fantastic. Water based so no smell, dries super fast and easy to clean the brushes. I think it was £7.75. Chairs are super smooth now.OSWL (start 13st) by 30Jun20 6/10
