wow you two get up really early! I have problems sleeping and sometimes (like now) you are up minutes after I've finally fallen asleep! Taking steps to become more diurnal but if you have tips would love them!

Back on topic, just wanted to say that i'm loving seeing and hearing about all your projects, even though i'm not doing any myself at the moment!

Have started painting one of my kitchen chairs, it is going to take quite a few coats to cover them, but starting to get an idea of the finished effect.

However, I'm not sure of the 'feel' of the chalkpaint, it's got a rough unpleasant texture which won't be too bad on some furniture but for something we sit on and have to handle a lot I know it won't be appreciated in my house. Will that disappear with the varnish or would it be better to wax?

I am wondering about putting some of the B&Q Everywhere paint in satin on top of the chalkpaint which could work.

Would be grateful for advice please. :)

Worry not. Just sand them inbetween coats.

    Also sand before waxing.

The end result will feel velvety, I promise. No matter how grainy the texture is now.

    It sands beautifully smooth.

I've not been on for a while, I've been busy doing other things and not painted anything in ages. But my husband bought this ugly old telephone table last week, I have no idea why!
Anyway here's the before and after

Wow! I'm in between coats and very inspired.

Thank you Chalkysoil, Seakay and Jumblejack for your encouragement and advice.

Yes am an insomniac. I did get it sorted then took on a new job last year (!) and back to square one. Milky drinks, warm baths, relaxing, none help when you're a born worrier! I was worried about money then got a better paid job and now I'm worried about losing my job! Be careful what you wish for is so true. The thing that did used to work for me was to make sure I was hydrated early in the day (!) and to listen to the radio bore (4) through my earphones at night. Now even that is only partly successful. Hence you'll find me on MSE late at night. Perhaps we ought to start an insomnia a thread? :rotfl:

my insomnia drives me mad. But I am getting 4 hours at a go lately. After a few days I'm wiped out and sleep twice to catch up. I've tried radio 4/ World Service/ 4xtra, Guardian cryptic crosswords, naming flowers/fruit/cars/ girls names alphabetically A to Z ,then 2 x A, 2 x B etc. So I'm usually up around 4 am or so if I got to sleep in the first place.
Anyway ... hubs has been a sweetie today and has been fixing up some of the clapped out old furniture I bought a van load of the other week. It's beyond shabby chic, more Rough Luxe! I've lined the drawers with some Mary Quant wallpaper I bought in a charity shop. Not 60's, probably 80/90's.

I also treated myself to 2 old black flat irons last week, from a boot fair. I'd had a yearning for one for years, and then I get two!

I can really empathise. Before I had the iPhone I regularly ended up listening to the shipping weather too - I expect you're the same. :)

    Your finds sound wonderful.

I have almost finished painting one very shabby chair cream. Really pleased. I've just asked for a sample of a red spotted fabric which will look very country kitchen. So excited. :):):)

The B&Qoo everywhere went on top of the chalkpaint beautifully and I am going to put some varnish over the top for an ultra smooth finish.

    :):):):):):)

Ps am now looking at some decoupage for a chest of drawers (whoa)!

Have a good evening. Hope I get some noddy blinkers tonight. :)

Take your pic, print to the size required, cut out with craft knife and then PVA directly onto your furniture!

Wow, great thanks. It's great to find a source of reliable advice, part of my problem is knowing where to start as there's so much advice out on'tinterweb.

Have just put on a coat of Wilko* varnish and it's drying already and yes you were all right it is fabulously smooth. I will put on a second coat as recommended for durability. Can't wait to paint the other 5 and get the fabric to cover the seats. That may have to wait until May bank hols as I have some 'work' work to do and a job to apply for and some visitors this weekend but I'll see how it goes.

Just so happy that they look so lovely and so far have spent only £48 which will do 6 chairs plus a load of other stuff. Fabric should be no more than £30 and they will be like new chairs. A lot cheaper than buying new ones which was DHs suggestion. I will have to sand the table top down at some point and then varnish it and I plan to paint just the legs. Then will move onto decoupaging my chest of drawers (then DDs furniture next). Oh and the sideboard in the kitchen - am going to be very very busy!!!!:eek::o:o

Oh and I've just remembered I would like to buy and shabby chic a new wardrobe rail/drawer and my dark wood corner units. Those will be last _- do you think dark wood will have come back into fashion by then? :-)

Oh and I mustn't forget the lampshades I need to make a la Jumblejack's Pinterest page - which is brilliant btw
