Hello all, it's been an absolute age since I've posted here, I've been lurking occassionally though to catch up on all your shabby chicing though! Thought I'd pop in to let you know of something I've discovered, if you have a B&M near you they have a few Laura Ashley things in that have been repackaged, there's this owl doorstop http://www.lauraashley.com/home-decoration/owl-doorstop/invt/3451957/ which I think is £3.99, and this Home Sweet Home plaque http://www.lauraashley.com/home-decoration/vintage-wooden-home-sweet-home-sign/invt/3406888/ which I think is £2.99, so good to grab a bargain! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, I'll try and keep up with the thread now!

  • Hello again shabbiers!!

well today i went into town and bought a tin of 'Pure white undercoat' 'matt clear varnish' and some sandpaper. They were from wilkos, the undercoat was roughly £5 and the varnish was £7.50ish.

I have this odd occasional table id like to use as my first project (i'll post a pic asap!) I couldnt really afford to buy a big tin of dulux so when i got home i found a unopened tin of focus' 'world of colour' silk emulsion in 'Whiskey Cream' (like a pale baileys??!!) could i use this? id prefer a matt finish to the piece so it wont work will it?

also i cannot afford F and B eggshell finish paint, what could i use instead? just a matt emulsion?? or a wood type one? oh dear!

If im right in thinking, (i have read the whole thread and am currently moving my way through the 2nd thread!)

    1. i'll sand it down with paper, just to rough it up a bit
    2. Apply 2 (?) coats of undercoat
    3. Apply 2-5 thin coats of emulsion
    4. Sand again????
    5. Apply clear varnish 1 coat??

im so sorry for all the questions ladies i just dont want to mess it up!

    thankyou so much in advance!

Dancingbutterfly - A matt paint will give you a better finish but it's not very hard wearing....if it's a table that you're going to use lots then make sure it gets a coat of matt varnish afterwards......to that end I'm guessing a silk emulsion with a matt varnish over it may work.

I've always used a cheap white matt emulsion as an undercoat (a bit of a sand first to give it a key), you might want 2 layers, depending on what colour you're painting over. Then I use a matt emulsion on top, again, depending on the finish you want it can be anything from one to 3/4 coats...if you get any major blobby bits or brush marks then wait for it to dry and give it a bit of a sand between paint layers.....

Just remember that you can always sand the table down again and repaint if you don't like what you've done. I use a spray varnish which covers nice and quickly, although it probably costs a bit more.....1 coat should do but if in doubt, add another.

Cath Kidston website has a sale on. The cherry range are reduced. Noticed yesterday, was tempted, but I have to clear out the clutter first and then decide. Still thinking about the boats wallpaper for the new bathroom.! :D

The boats wallpaper is gorgeous and i have seen it in the flesh so to speak and doesn't disappoint! However is it suitable for bathroom? Double check as that could be an expensive mistake! My friend has it in a downstairs toilet and another her son's room.

I have bought a duvet cover, pillowcases and flour shaker thingy from CK in the sale and some egg cups! Naughty! But nice! :D

    Hi,
I bought a gorgeous dresser in a charity shop a few months back and have finally got round to painting it. It was a very dark brown colour so I sanded it back and am going to paint it cream .
So far it's had two coats of B&Q primer/undercoat but the undercoat is starting to turn brown where the stain underneath seems to be bleeding though - what can I do to stop it?

It's just as bad on the second coat of paint as the first so think it's going to keep coming through
