  • I have a question-
When I bought my house about 5 years ago the stairs, the doors and the cladding in the front porch were all varnished within an inch of their lives.
Is it possible to remove said varnish and apply paint? I have a feeling the house will be so much lighter if I could just scrape away the dull varnish!
    Thanks!
I don't often return to a thread I've posted on so.... if you want to ask me about anything I've written please pm me- I don't bite.

I've painted over stained and varnished cladding before. I just sanded it to key and primed/undercoated a few times until the dark colour wasn't showing through anymore, then a couple of coats of top coat. Still looking nice and white nearly 3 years later.

    Hi,
I bought a gorgeous dresser in a charity shop a few months back and have finally got round to painting it. It was a very dark brown colour so I sanded it back and am going to paint it cream .
So far it's had two coats of B&Q primer/undercoat but the undercoat is starting to turn brown where the stain underneath seems to be bleeding though - what can I do to stop it?

It's just as bad on the second coat of paint as the first so think it's going to keep coming through

May be a bit late for your needs but this sort of product

could help. As well as this name brand I think that some DIY stores do an own brand version, pretty sure that Wickes does at least.
  • Hi, Ithought some people may be interested.. I saw a cute ceramic polka dot chicken in poundland today.. very shabby chic!
  • :)

I've a question if you don't mind. If I emulsion primed wood then apply a matt clear varnish on top will that made it hard wearing.

I have both in the garage you see. I really don't want to spend any more money on a car boot chair. I will though if I have too.

Yes, it will be as hardwearing as the varnish is.
