close up of a side panel in the kitchen which is ancient laminate. I really piled it on thick on this, ages later it's still sticking nicely despite being above the electric kettle.

That has lasted - did you do the fingernail test on it?

  • Tried that now - seems to shift slightly off all my painted bits - maybe my fingernails are too sharp. Will applying the wax help it to last better.
We have no children to bang in to the painted furniture - dread the thought of starting all over with painting. I have a chair, corner unit, glass cabinet, bookcase and 2 storage units that are painted now.
If I just use as is - will it peel in places or come off completely?

I washed & dried it first - didn't even bother to prise out the little studs that are shelf supports! I think it had 3 coats of ASCP old white and a coat of Wilko varnish
I have 2 of those - want to use as shelves in my craft room.

No - but I just did, on a bit where the paint had slurped inside a bit - it came off. Also came off on a wooden display cupboard which also hasn't been waxed or varnished. It doesn't come off with anything that has been finished though. My kitchen panel and my cupboard aren't in places that can be knocked easily, but the main reason I haven't finished them is that I have a gazillion projects on the go at once , not to mention the garden ... I will get around to it eventually!

I'm having major hassles replying to posts on here - only the quick reply box is working .

If you don't finish the painted cupboards off with wax or varnish, they will scratch back to the laminate easily when you load boxes in and out of the shelves. That kind of distressing doesn't look all that lovely imo, it's not artistic somehow.

yes as long as you've got a decent amount of paint on, not as some of the bald looking bits in your pics.
