I'd use a mini roller where possible Flo. Sometimes you need three coats to cover everything but it depends what look you're going for.

I did try a mini roller at the start of painting but thought it gave so much texture. May be a roller will be best now I have a coat of paint on the items. I don't think I can use a roller on much of the chair but for the large sides/top of bookcase - I could.

  • I do 3 coats when changing from brown to white. Yes, emulsion is fine once the chalk paint is dry.

Do I wax if use emulsion? Plus which is most hard wearing - chalk paint with wax or emulsion?

possibly chalk paint with wax, but emulsion with wax will be pretty sturdy.

somewhere back in the thread users were talking about mini rollers - I think they said use one for gloss paint.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do you paint furniture to make it look shabby chic and what paint do you use? :)

there's 10 different answers to that question! Depends on the wood partly. For starters, paint with chalk paint and then wax, then distress if wanted. You could make your own home made chalk paint using matt emulsion, plaster of paris and some water, I use 3 parts emulsion, I part P of P and 1 part or less of water.

click on search this thread on the right of the green bar towards the top of the page. put in shabby paint or whatever you want to research and all references will be listed for you.

As you rightly guess there are a lot of answers to your question over the three threads!
  • I would always recommend sugar soaping every piece. Even if it looks clean, you can be surprised what colour your cloth goes!
