Thanks hmo, might give it a go with just the top layer. I'm just worried it will tear when it's wet and you're trying to pull it taught to fold it over etc.

Hi everyone, have been reading this thread for over a year and have learned a lot! I just wanted to ask....I don't know whether to use annie sloan chalk paint, or go along the Blackfriars problem solving primer, then emulsion and wax route? Do you get a similar finish with either option, or is there a big difference?
Thanks!0 -
chalk paint is nice but too rustic for some sorts of furniture/tastes. It's bliss to distress though. If it's waxed pine - you'll probably want Blackfriars as well anyway.
Primer then Emulsion gives a finer finish -less brush strokes, cheaper, more variety of ready mixed colours.
They both need waxing.
Have a look at Emma Kate's home page blog, she has some lovely examples with emulsion. I do nearly everything in chalkpaint myself.
It's going to depend on what the furniture is made of and how much you want to distress it etc.0 -
I have a large chest of drawers with a mirror attached. The mirror sits on a backing and has these plastic clips to hold mirror in place. One has snapped off does anyone know what this type of clip its called ? I want to sell it but i don't want mirror to fall off on way to new owner lol. Also some of the drawers my daughter seems to have picked off some bits of wood i think it shows in pic. If someone wants to buy it to paint can they use some sort of filler or something to cover or will it be a problem? If i had the room i would sort this out myself but we just don't have the time or space. Excuse all the clutter its stuff we have sorted to sell but its hard getting five minutes to get anything done with a toddler.
I also have a small narrow dresser dumping ground, in our downstairs loo. I was thinking next summer (no garage or space to do it inside) of painting it to get rid of that awful pine colour. Suggestions appreciated.0 -
Hi everyone - can anyone recommend any really nice shades of teal paint? I have a small bookcase I want to paint teal but I'm struggling to find the paint.'Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain'0

There is a lot of teal around at the moment

but i would just warn against Crowne or Homebase as there have been a lot of problems with their paints developing a sulpher like smell in warm weather. My friend's sister used Homebase and they are refusing to compensate (in spite of Watchdog investigation) and others have said that they had to bleach the walls and then repaint

I am finally ready to paint furniture.
I have POP as want to have a try at HM chalk paint. Is Wilkins.. own brand emulsion okay to use please?
I thought of waxing after painting but would a clear varnish give more protection? The bits of furniture will be for storage in my craft room.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45

use matt if you can as opposed to silk, silk is fine to use but clogs your brushes more imo.0 -
I use varnish on utility furniture but wax on posh bits. I find varnish really quick and easy. As long as you let the paint dry first, don't fiddle with the varnished bits while they are tacky, and use a lovely new brush or one just for varnish. I use Wilko's matt waterbased clear, I think it's £7 odd a litre. It's not perfectly clear ( although I used to think it was) it has a slight antique tinge to it, a little more than the clear wax does. I would advise you practice on a shelf first, and look at it a day later and see if you like it.
The degree of protection is probably similar, but I think ( being a bit of a slob) that varnish is easier to dust, clean up spills etc.
If you want to distress or antique effect etc , wax is better.
Chalk paint ( unless you lightly sand it after painting it) is never going to be as smooth as factory sprayed. It will look hand painted and crafted, unique and country style.
anyway, looking forward to some new pics0 -
Thanks for the help. I have to remove the doors - don't I - before painting?
I am going to tackle the corner unit first - I will post photos.
Where do I get the clear varnish and what make is best please?Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45
