Thanks Hmo! I haven't done anything with it yet. I already have 2 chalkboards but I was thinking of adding bronze cup hooks so we can use it for keys. I can't find bronze ones anywhere though. They have to be very small.
Debi1402 - this furniture painting is very addictive! Please take before and after shots so we can see the transformation!

Could you use gold ones and colour them with a sharpie or nail varnish to get the colour you want
  • Hello! been lurking on here for a while and thought i'd post today! It's a Very inspirational thread as I'm currently in the process of transforming our bedroom & living room. We've not long moved house and recently sanded down a wooden sideboard we got in a charity shop for the living room. We've been getting some pallets from my dad and my OH has made a nice crate for me out of them and will paint it up. We also made a sidetable for at the side of the bed which we're pretty proud of and just needs a paint! looking forward to getting stuck in :)

I made some little hanging hearts at the weekend after spending too long on pinterest! Hopefully my photo uploads but we will see! I have made 2 so far and are hanging on the chimney breast but need to make some more for the other side :) I love coming on here to look at your photos! they are wonderful.x

  • Hello :hello:,

someone from another thread recommended this one. What I've seen is lovely. Some great tips and tricks etc. I though I join in as I want to do a few things around the house before the baby comes in March but not spend a fortune (saving for wedding too). So I thought I share some initial pictures from my kitchen makeover. It's an 80s kitchen with dark cherry like wood cabinets that I washed with sugar soap, sanded (steel wool in the grooves), primed and then painted a buttermilk satin. Also gonna white wash the magnolia walls at some point. This room can be rally dark and gloomy in winter plus it's looking a bit tired and dirty so I thought I brighten it up.

Only going to manage two or three doors at a time (space issue) but that way I should be able to finish by christmas ;)

There are a few ways you can go... Always start with sugar soap.
Chalk paint is the easiest as you don't need to sand at all but the drawbacks are; it's not the flattest finish, you may get old stains bleeding through (especially with dark wood) and it needs further protection like wax or varnish.
With other paints it's best to give a light sand down. Not to remove the finish, just to scuff it up so the paint has something to cling to. Then waterbased primer. If, at this stage you get any bleed through, stop and use a stain covering/problem solving primer. Then you can use the top coat. Matt emulsion will need further protection, just like chalk paint. (Wax or varnish) However if you use an eggshell it won't need any further protection. Saving you time and money if you just want flat white.
I use a lot of Wilkinsons paints. Love them. Dulux waterbased whites have gone right downhill in my estimation in terms of coverage. They are so transparent. Dulux Trade paints are far superior if you can get those near you.
    Hope that helps.
Do I need to sugar soap - wash the furniture before chalk painting please?

I'd always use it on furniture in kitchen or where people smoked as it's great for removing grease and nicotine etc. But it might nit be necessary if the furniture is "clean".

  • Had my first go at making and using chalk paint today. Seem to have made it okay but how many coats do you have to do? Also I can't get a good finish - brushstrokes a problem.
Could I put a coat of emulsion on the chair now I have used the chalk paint - would that give me a good finish?
The chair is not too bad - the pieces of furniture with bigger areas are worse.
