Ok great that's how I did the wicker baskets actually earlier in the year thanks for reminding me I've decided I am using white eggshell and cath kidston rose duck for the top as I've got a piece left over from the roman blinds so should look nice

I wouldn't soak them, but you can scrub them and use the shower head to get all the muck out and leave them to dry. I think the wicker might split or crack if you soak it, but I'm not sure...

    thanks kate,
personally i think they would just absorbed a small amount of moisture, swell a tad and tighten then be just fine, better in fact as they would become less brittle but the boss thinks the same as yourself so thats 2:1 at the minute,.
there really solid good ones, probably 50 60 years old but have some woodworm damage.
ill have a google see if i can prove myself correct!!!!!!!

seems im wrong, as you say spray them and even use a bowl of soapy water.
water is good for them but soaking is not so good.

Back from visiting family - eager to get on with painting the furniture. I have almost finished painting - 6 bookcases, 3 storage units, rocking chair, carver chair, glass cabinet and 2 corner units. All except 1 bookcase are items of furniture for my new craft room. The painting is happening in my old lounge where my craft room will be situated. We are going to have a small lounge upstairs. We gave up having a TV and only need a small lounge - where as I NEED a bigger craft room.
Question for you shabby chic experts - would it be a good idea to paint the insides of all these units - which are for craft items storage - with a water based varnish. The outsides of the furniture plus the chairs will be waxed. This is my first venture into furniture painting - yes - I know - 14 pieces - gone for it big time!
I will be posting photos - have taken them of before/during process.
So keen now to get my new craft room up and running.
