To be honest I think that's going to be a pig to paint or spray.
How about stapling some fabric on to it to make it a completely different bit of furniture?"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -

I have had a go at waxing a piece of HM chalk painted furniture. I used clear then dark wax. Advice, comments welcome.
After distressing but before wax.

Paint samples offer (3x30ml for £1 no p&p and no limit to amounts you order) - could be good for small pieces and making HM chalk paint

Good morning
I would like a little advice please. I am finally getting around to (in the next month, anyway) painting my extending dining table and chairs. I am going with home-made chalk paint. I have used this before for side furniture and used Ronseal quick-drying water based varnish over the top, which stands up well to sticky fingers, but I suspect won't do so well on a heavily used dining table.
I will use an oilcloth over the table much of the time I suspect, but the chair frames tend to get icky and I want something washable and hard wearing. What should I use? Or would it be best to just buy a tin of matt wood paint?
I love all your beautiful projects btw :happyhear0 -

I personally wouldn't use any Chalk paint on a table top. It's texture doesn't lend itself well to large flat surfaces. (There are lots of people who do though.) I have used it as a primer and then gone over it with neat emulsion for a smoother look.
It will need protecting and wax (especially dark wax) won't stand up to scrubbing. It'll go patchy. The varnish you mention is great. I used this OVER dark wax on my dining table when the wax was fully cured and it worked a treat.
Alternatively you could just opt for a really durable paint like an eggshell in either oil based or water based and this will need no further protection and give you a nice flat finish. This would need to be applied after a light sanding, and priming though.
And no matter what you choose to paint with, always sugar soap! It makes such a difference!0 -
Thank you Emma Kate, I never thought of sugar soap.
Just this morning I have been given almost 5 litres of putty grey emulsion; I am really tempted to make Chalk paint and use it on the table. At worst, I will have to go over it with eggshell. I don't mind brushstrokes, it is more the chipping/scratching that is an issue with kids. It won't need distressing, it will find my darling children distressing enough
Will let you know how it goes...0
