They were really horrid hardboard 1960's hollow doors to start with but the frame is very strong. I love that it's real wood. All the built in wardrobe people offer plastic coated MDF.

This is the small chest that we found dumped on a pavement. I used Cool Grey HM chalk paint and clear varnish. It is for storage in my craft room. One of the handles needs attention plus a strut is missing inside where the drawers sit. I will get those jobs done. not sure what to do about handles.

Hi just found this thread! Loving the photos, but dont have time to go back over the threads at the moment, but wanted a bit of advice. I have some dining chairs that I want to shabby up. Someone told me to use chalky matt paint from wicks. Would you agree? Or if not, what would you all use? I have heard of Annie sloane but can't afford to pay that much.

    Hope you can help me
    Thanks

At the top of the page see a green backgrounded "search this thread" button. Put in home made chalk paint for lots of information about how to make your own using matt emulsion form cheaper suppliers eg Wilkos

You could use matt emulsion but you'd need to sand and prime (waterbased) first ideally. Or you could use the matt emulsion to make home made chalk paint (hmcp) then you shouldn't need to sand and prime, just sugar soap.
But using matt paint, your finish will need protection in the form of wax or varnish.
Alternatively use an eggshell (shinier) paint that needs no further protection. But you'd need to sand and prime...
Some woods bleed old stain or colour through the paint. If this happens, stop and use a special primer that deals with stains.
    Good luck!
