chalk paint is very flat and "chalky" and is an acquired taste untreated. I've done some things with matt varnish ( picture frames etc) which gives a good finish too. But for distressing wax finish is best ( imo) It's not that the paint wears off without wax, there are shop fronts years old still surviving unfinished, it just looks and feels nicer.
Have a look at this pinterest board, she has a vast collection of ascp painted items and many of them lead back to tutorials on blogs

Thanks again!
So to get started, I should give it a good wipe, paint directly on with chalk paint, use fine sandpaper over the bits where I want the wood to show through, cover everything with wax??!!0 -
Sorry, one more question, Is French Linen taupe-y or grey-y?!0
-
I sandpaper after waxing, then dab a bit of wax on the bare bits.
What is the furniture made of? Waxed pine can have knot bleed. Varnished is ok.

finally finished the lamp.(£1.25 charity shop) 2 coats of ascp original, two dry brushes of pastel emulsion, waxed, sanded, waxed, buffed. Cut up a 50p china lamp from Boot fair to get the electrics out of it, wired up the lamp. Took about 6 goes as I hadn't done one for years, it does help if you put the wire through the casing before screwing it up, then realised I'd wired the socket to the plug end of the wire...
Added 50p charity shop shade. The end. For now.0 -

Today I picked up this bookcase for free. I saw it yesterday sitting on top of a skip just down the road and today I plucked up the courage to knock on the house and ask if I could have it.0

ooh - last week I paid £10 for one less nice!
Funnily I was just reading the Roadkill rescue site. My dad dragged home a bureau from the local tip, it's oak with Bakelite knobs but a drawer and its shelf top is missing. It's been sitting in our garage for ages waiting for inspiration, so I gave it a coat of primer today to see if it spoke to me. It didn't yet! ...

Ah, apparently Briwax over ASCP can lead to problems. Read the comments after the post.http://bluestarantiques.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/a-french-desk-worth-waiting-for.html
