I agree with Steve. F&B are very expensive! No undercoat needed especially not oil based. Only prime if you find the wood colour is bleeding through your chalk paint. And then you'd need a problem solving primer, but try home made p.o.p. paint on it's own first. Nine times out of ten there's no problem. Wilkos paints are great!0

just a note on wilkos paint.
they are running there stock down i think this may just mean a label change.
we have been using coastline hmcp and they no longer have it either online or in our local @ 5ltrs.
when we bought the one we have it was £15 as opposed to the normal £21 ish.
there were 3 at £15 that day.
the reason im saying this is dont get caught out with a colour you cant get no more if doing a few bits.0 -

if your friend has very little too spend then farrow and ball are not really the route to go, unless she already has the paint i would change my method and use homemade chalk paint, yes its sounds scary but i was a CP virgin a month back and it really is a lot easier than you might think.
for now i would go ahead with a very light sanding and a clean with sugar soap.
then find a colour of emulsion you/she would like.
if your only going to do this one item a litre will do but look for deal at all the main suspects.
ie: homebase are currently doing 2 for 1 on there 5 litre emulsions @ £24 each so 10lts for this price would give the opportunity to re vamp the room the item will be going in.
as for the chalk paint:
you need too buy from craft shops or cheaper online some plaster of paris powder.
you will mix this at 3 of your paint to 1 of plaster of paris ie 1000ml of paint with 330 of POP powder and 330ml of tepid water.
notice the one part of POP is the same amount of water as powder that then becomes the ONE part.
i only emphasize that as i got a bit confused there.
it is really easy and you can come back here and if you dont understand how too mix it it will be explained by someone who can word it better than me.
good luck!!!!!
Hi Steve
Thank you!
Yes, you're right she may not have the money to spend on F&B. I have copied your post and emailed it to her. Hopefully she can have a look in Wilks ASAP.
Then I'll give her a hand next weekend
Cheers everybody.

Toozie - I have a dresser wry similar (square topped instead of rounded). I found the top (above the drawers) was solid oak as we're the shelves on the dresser top so I stripped those back to bare wood. The rest got a quick sand and undercoat and topped with a satin finish for woodwork. There's some pics on my blog somewhere (click on my name on the left of here, click to visit my homepage) it's quite a way back, I've done a bigger dresser since then."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. i was thinking of doing a couple of old vases with HMCP but thought it may look different too add something too the paint, i realise this could be any paint but as CP sticks too most surfaces i thought that would be the bet too use.

http://www.paintsprays.co.uk/catalog/glitter-paint-p-239.html
For some reason the http bit of the URL got doubled in Mabel's post.

thanks maggie and mabel.
spraying possibly not the way i would go, more looking for a mix it yourself method to try on something small then maybe something bigger to use in the right room, it was just a thought really, i have them moments now and again
thanks though at least gives me some idea as there is an emulsion on the ebay link with glitter so it can be achieved.0
