flo - how's the renovations coming along? Are you builder free yet?
I've been given a 50s chair that's cross between a wing back and a rocking chair but on suspension springs rather than a rocker. Tatty isn't the word for it but it's so unique that I needed to bring it home and love it. I've never upholstered an entire chair before so took it to bits very carefully to work out what's what. The fabric and innards were disintegrating in my hands.....very, very dusty. It's stripped back to the wooden frame now so I need to get it rubbed own and then start the rebuilding work (I'm thinking of doing it a patchwork style as I've got some cream, brown and green velvet corduroy that someone donated to my stash. I shall uplaod some piccies when I'm done.
I also found a fab chunk of retro fabric in a charity shop, it's a flax and cotton mix so quite hard wearing. There was 6m of it for £10 - bargain! I've just are a news paper template for a bean bag so will get cutting later and hopefully it will look lovely.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45

I'm having another attempt at crackle glaze with pva, using emulsion paint this time. Something is happening, but I thought " the guy who invented sandpaper should get a nobel prize" :rotfl:0

Hi All, New to the thread!
I am slowly (very slowly) trying to read through the posts but I wonder if anyone could answer a few questions for me?
I have 2 pieces of furniture to paint, a chest of drawers and a tv unit.
im looking at the Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old Ochre, I would like it to be slightly chippy so am I right in thinking I need to buy the wax too? What is the most effective way to do it? It says on AS website that the wood needs no prep?
Any advice will be marvellous! Thanks xx0 -
you need a wax to seal the chalk paint ( ideally - although some don't) I like AS wax but there are others.
You won't get chippy as in milk paint chippy - but light sandpapering on raised areas afterwards gives a vintage distressed look.
Chalk paint doesn't need any preparation , although a good clean and 3 minutes sandpapering does help it.
====================================
Meanwhile ... I peeled and sanded off the crackled paint and sandpapered and here's one coat of ASCP waiting to dry.0 -
Thanks Chalky, why do you need to seal it. Yes Ive seen the milk paint chippy which is probably too much for me, Im thinking, edges, slight bits of molding on the drawer fronts etc.0
