I use Wilkos matt clear waterbased varnish on chalkpaint. I like it. It changes the colour slightly, the same way clear wax does. The chalkpaint is less chalky and more like ordinary paint. I have one cupboard with a varnished lower part & waxed top and they look the same in my hall.

oil based varnish is yellowy brown even if labelled clear.
I think I will use the varnish - sounds easier than wax.

Is it a water mark or a mark where the sun has darkened the wood around it?
I found this on the net:
''Water marks in pine/soft wood can almost always be 95% removed by washing the surface with plain water and scrubbing the surface with wire wool or a scotch pad. The water will dissolve the stain and raise the grain simultaneously so sanding the grain flat again will remove the remainder of the mark. If using a sander always finish sanding by hand with the grain to avoid sanding marks.''
    Might be worth a try?

Thanks for that Emma Kate. I have just today scrubbed the marks with bicarb of soda made to a paste using a toothebrush and rubbing in direction of the grain. Wood is now drying out so cant tell yet how successful/unsuccessful it has been. so should I sand it now whilst wood is still damp? Thanks:)

  • Can anyone advise whether I can use chalk paint as a primer on waxed furniture so that I can top coat with f&b eggshell please? I can't cope with the thought of removing the wax! Fingers crossed....

I've never used f & b but I've put chalk paint on wax loads of times, and I don't see why not.

finished the ascp painted bread bin

  • Thank you. My worry is the f&b eggshell wouldnt adhere to the chalk paint properly.
