Hi I have been looking at this thread for months , but I'm a chicken, dont know where to start, my local charity shop sell small pieces of furniture for under £5, I actually saw one like the round one you have just got Steve, I have some of the black velvet, I used to use it to make my jewellery display boards from when I used to sell jewellery, can you just tell me did you sand it down, and what sort of paint did you use, and if you don't mind to estimated cost, just thinking if I could do this and maybe sell on few bits, any tips would be grateful, thanks.:)0

im not really qualified to give advice and there will hopefully be some follow up from others.
i used a wilkinsons brand emulsion, it was £15 for 5 litres, the sticky velvet was £2.50 ish, the drawer knob was £1, £3 for the table and £11 for beeswax.
i used plaster of plaster paris powder mixed 1 to 1 with lukewarm water ie 20ml water with 20ml POP.
this amount would then be mixed with 60ml of your choice of emulsion.
so the mix is 3:1, 3 of paint too one of POP mix.
we only bought 5lts because i had too do several items and there is still 2.5lts left.
the wax will cover you for probably 15 or more tables this size.
so the main layout is the wax £11 and the POP powder @ £2.50 for 2.5 kilos.
you can use a couple of testers too complete a table this size, that would give you 200ml of paint once mixed with the POP.
the total cost including the table was probably £9.00
i did give this a 10 minute light sanding but there really isnt any need with chalk paint (homemade POP paint), you can of course buy chalk paint, annie sloans being very popular @ £17 per litre
if you dont want to use chalk paint you can just use emulsion BUT you then need too fully prepare the wood, ie: lots of sanding down and undercoat or prime the wood before painting, chalk is easy and cheap.
im not great at explaining when writing it down but hopefully that made some sense.
2 weeks ago i was asking the same questions that you are, just give it a go.0 -
Thanks steve, I understand now, I was wondering what this pop meant,I will give it try, will be looking out for some small bits to try now thanks for your help,;)0

you dont need the branded ones as you just pay for the name, as with many things.0 -
I've just dragged this iron gate in from my outside stash... thinking of doing it up ( starting with rehoming the spider ), anyone ever renovated ironwork to indoor standards without using blacking etc? I want to keep it's rusty loveliness but make it bearable for my husband!0
