Love it! Ignore the husband and leave it rusty! Matt varnish will stop it making a mess. I'm thinking headboard!
(If you really want to fix it like new, wire brush the rust off, red oxide primer (spray or normal) and metal paint.)0 -

it's def staying rusty! At the moment it hasn't moved and is still encrusted with black cobwebs and worse. Too small for a headboard as only 30" wide. I'm reluctant to use it as a trellis as our garden is huge and totally overgrown and lots of things are lost in it. Heligan style. I think matt varnish will be the way to go as it should glue the falling flakes of rust in place. I found a few bits of original paint on it - which appear to be brown of all colours!
Meanwhile I bought a box with nice champagne writing on it , probably an xmas gift set, in pale blond wood. I've stained it with 50% light oak rustins, and given it a few coats of left over wicker basket wash. ( which hums badly now). It doesn't look anything like as nice as your crates, so waiting for some drying and then back to the fray.0 -

Maybe you need to go over the writing in paint and a teeny brush? Has it got lost in the wood treatments? I'm sure they look great!0 -
thanks but no it isn't that. It's two things. One - the top & bottom are plywood type stuff ( like the Ikea Mopp drawers) and two I've been !!!!!ing around all diluted and neat. The sides which are timber look fairly ok. I waxed it in Ronseal brushing wax, then in diluted dark wax, now in neat dark wax! It looks about 10 years old as against brand new. I should have put the wood dye on neat, and painted more matt & greyish wash for a start.
Improved it somewhat by stabbing it with the sharp end of a screwdriver :rotfl:

here it is, the two pale bits of wood are from inside & show what colour it was this morning. it's only to keep paints in so I think I'll leave it & move on.0 -

I used linseed oil on small pieces of door furniture, but for larger areas I've seen people advised to use Penetrol which is usually used to make oil paints and varnishes flow better. Apparently you use it neat and have the option of putting a matt varnish on top.
I've read that you can buy it in Dulux paint stores but I've no experience of it myself0 -
Hi all,
Some fab work on here, really lovely.
Was just wondering what sort of finish does a matt varnish give? It may be a silly question but I have never seen or used it before but have bought a tin as I have recently chalk painted a large unit, a small round table and my coffee table.
The round table looked brilliant, was really happy with the result and my little one has managed to smash the glass top by dropping a Yankee Candle jar onto it! It's lasted all these years in one piece I have it for around 6 weeks and it's broken... This was me -
So back to matt varnish ... How does it look when it's dried?
Thanks x:j Started comping on 15/6/2013.
:T Well done to everyone else, hope you all carry on winning. You all do an amazing job. Thank you x

I use Wilkos matt clear waterbased varnish on chalkpaint. I like it. It changes the colour slightly, the same way clear wax does. The chalkpaint is less chalky and more like ordinary paint. I have one cupboard with a varnished lower part & waxed top and they look the same in my hall.
oil based varnish is yellowy brown even if labelled clear.0
