Hi all
I have found a new project - an old gate leg table.
Now, I know this table is going to be used a a lot, so I was planning on painting the bottom and varnishing the top. I have never varnished before, so has anyone got any recommendations as to what varnish to use?
Thanks in advance xI must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:0 -

The oil based varnishes are the toughest but they can also add a yellow tinge which can be a problem if your wood is pale or pine. And they continue to yellow with time.
Do you know what the wood is? Are you going to whitewash it first or dye it darker? This can add a whole new dimension.
Don't forget varnish comes in matt, satin and gloss so you can choose which finish you prefer.
I use both water based and oil based varnishes. Make sure your surface is wiped clean of dust before you start. You can very gently sand between coats with the finest sandpaper.0 -
Hi, I'm not sure what type of wood it is but it is old and not veneered. I have sanded it in preparation and the wood still looks quite dark. I'll try an oil based varnish and see how it goes. xI must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:0

If it's dark, oil based will be fine as it won't show if it darkens. It will take longer to dry but you'll get a really tough finish. Show us when it's done?0
