I bought a sack in 99p store, fairly loose weave but I couldn't resist it.

my grey ikea drawers are delayed, as having finished, I suddenly noticed they could be turned on their side and the drawers too, which was likely to be useful. So now I'm painting it's bottom which will be a side. And my drawers have handle holes in the back as well as the front, so no point reversing them and adding handles.

potaotes tend to come in paper sacks, but petfood shops sometimes have birdseed which comes in sacking sacks - usually plastic but worth asking. I got a few from the independent that I got my catfood from before it sadly closed down.

I've seen them in Garden Centres, so might be worth having a look.
  • I think coffee shops have sacks. Hessian is very cheap though.

Ok well having been inspired by you guys I thought i might try my first shabby project.... and need help lol

I needed a TV stand for my bedroom and have bought this:

    ScreenHunter_03Feb121213_zps3a76ab8f.gif

Anyway - I only want to paint it (and maybe change the handles) but not sure what i need to do!! Do i need to sand it first?! (I really should have started smaller right!!)

I was looking at painting it in the Annie Sloan "cream" colour.... is there any cheaper paints?

I'm thinking od covering the glass also that you cant see inside the unit... maybe remove the glass, attach some plywood and paint that too
any help will be apprichiated - Regards, Mimi

when i did my clock at the weekend with AS i didnt sand or anything just gave it a quick wipe over with a damp cloth and when dry painted it.

I found AS paint quit thick so if you feel the same after you have done one coat water it down a bit to make it spread easier.

i wouldn't remove the glass i would get some nice shabby fabric and hang curtains, you only need a straight line of sewing for a hem and you could use net wire you know the kind you thread through and hold in place with little cup hooks hooks.

or you could buy glass etching which you can get on the roll and make the glass frosted.

You don't have to use Annie Sloan or indeed any chalk paint. You can use ordinary matt emulsion like tester pots or eggshell. You will however need to sand VERY lightly if it's pine and use a waterbased primer first with these paints. But a tester pot of Wilkinsons paint is £1 and goes a long way.
With chalk paint or emulsion you'll need to protect the paint with wax or varnish. With eggshell it's fine on it's own.
If it's factory lacquered pine the knots should be ok but if it's waxed pine you'll need to treat the knots with two coats of Blackfriars problem solving Primer or similar stain blocking waterbased primer and only paint with chalk paint. Unless you're prepared to sand it all over to remove the wax...
How about replacing the glass with chicken wire with fabric stapled behind that?
