I'm a lurker on here and would really welcome some advice on paint colours/colour schemes as you all seem to have such a flair for design.
I'm going to decorate our guest room. It's a smallish, north-facing room, rather dark. We're having a bank of white fitted wardrobes along one wall (don't ask). I want to keep it as empty as possible as it can look rather cramped. I'm keeping the bed as it's quite new: a single with an extra bed that pulls out from underneath.
I'm thinking creams and whites with a large mirror propped against the wall and then just a chair and a bedside table. I want restful, light, clean and a bit French. I'd welcome any particular paint ideas, curtains, furniture, bedding, carpet?? Pretty please.0 -
Distressed, painted furniture looks pretty french. You could also have one wall in toile de jouy style wallpaper or have toile fabric curtains or bedding? Blue or pale green would be nice and fresh and clean looking. If its a small, dark room you need to keep it pretty light in there and patterns to a minimum to avoid it feeling crowded.
Toile ideas: http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/19012/list/8-Easy-Ways-to-Bring--Toile-de-Jouy--Into-Your-Home Don't know how good the article is, i just looked at the pictures lol!Sarah.

That's a great idea, uropachild. I didn't want to use a feature wall of darker paint but a fresh wallpaper might work well and I could follow it through with cushions for the bed and perhaps cover a chair seat. Good food for thought. Thank you.0 -
I'm thinking, if it's a small dark room and you're having white wardrobes, paint the walls white (bear with me!). Keep the linen white. Maybe with pin tucks or a little embroidery but plain white. For the flooring, go for something like a sisal matting. Aim for a kind of digestive biscuit colour. Then on the light, use one of those large circular string lamp shades in a dark brown or a white finish (dunelm sell them). Then add a touch of colour. A bright red would be a good colour. But use it as a print on a light coloured background fabric. Try to get some toile de jouy fabric for cushions. You could add a red ribbon to edge with or to use as ties around the back. A red rug on the floor. A natural wood or painted picture frame with a splash of red in it or frame some red toile (etc) wallpaper. A Set of curtains with the toile fabric on a white background.
I can see it now, it would look lovelyDebt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
I'm really warming to the idea of toile or similar.
Kaz, I think you're right about the colour for the floor but I may stick with carpet for a softer feeling underfoot in the bedroom. I'm loving the idea of snowy, white bedlinen. I'd like vintage but I'll settle for something similar. I'd adore a French, painted armoire but it wouldn't be practical for our storage needs. I'm settling for Ikea wardrobes with the most traditional style doors I could find. These come in gleamingly brilliant white but after a little while I'm sure DH would be persuaded to paint them!;)
I've done a quick Google and finding places that do matching toile wallpaper and fabric are few and far between and/or horrendously expensive. I think Laura Ashley may be my best bet for paper. I'd probably only need a roll for a small feature wall. If anyone sees anything in the Toile de Jouy style around do let me know. I suppose B&Q etc has got to be worth a look.
I'm also drawn to the damask type styles on LAs site. I live in a 20s house so that might achieve the same sort of look but more in keeping with the sort of wallpaper this house will have seen over the years.
Thanks so much for the inspiration. All ideas welcome!0 -

If you can visit a Laura Ashley shop they often have the odd roll of toile in their bargain wallpaper bucket.0
