i dont know how to upload photos so have put a link to it, i bought this frame yesterday for a quid - wish i had taken a before shot!! i sanded it and then used 2 x undercoat but it started cracking, but to be honest i like the effect then i put two roses on to it using pva and then finished off with antique furniture wax, i am really pleased with it - i hope my daughter likes it....
A quick question though - why would the paint have cracked like it did? i do like the effect but need to know why as this is my first attempt and don't necessarily want that to happen to everything i try to do, especially not when it comes to doing my dresser.

I found this in a CSI have been after one for ages
I made this for my mum's birthday, the top heart is where she was born, the middle where she lived when she had me and my 2 sisters and the last where she is now
I love theses style of frames, some I paint, like this one, some I leave natural
The maps I buy as cheap as I can get but the middle one I had to get off ebay , only a £1 but it was a 1963 map so I had it photocopied as I didn't want to cut a small heart out of it
I love your heart maps picture - what a unique gift for your mum, im sure she will be over the moon; i would be xxVery proud to be Strip club member No 430 -

Also, look out for dented tins which they tend to stick out at sale time for around half price. They are usually on the same display shelves but at the front with yellow reduced stickers on0 -
Lovely framed pictures Hart. I was struggling to think of a unique (make myself for a reasonable price) gift for Mr C and you just gave me an idea. do you mind if I steal it?Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. hart, what an absolutely great gift idea your map heart pictures. Gorgeous.
bensonsmum, did it crackle after you put the top coat of paint on? If so did you use the same base paint, ie, oil or water based as the undercoat?
What did you clean it with after sanding?
By the way I think it looks great but it would be gutting to have that finish on your dressing table if it's not the effect you're going for.0 -

I cleaned it off with a damp cloth after sanding then left if for a couple of hours before applying paint, i used water based primer/undercoat in one and again a water based topcoat. It crackled after each coat of paint i put on so i haven;t got a clue where i went wrong..... hopefully you will:)Very proud to be Strip club member No 430 -

Morning, I thought that maybe you had used water based topcoat over oil base undercoat.
Could the frame have been waxed previously & you didn't get all the wax off? Or something on the cloth?
Did you sand lightly between each coat, that won't have stopped it from crackling completely but may help for next time.
Did you use a new paint brush?
Other than that I'm afraid I have no idea.0 -

I think it may have been waxed, it was very old so could have been a build up and i didn't get it all off when i rubbed it down so will try harder next time, or as you say could have been the paintbrush - it was an old one and ive no idea what it had been cleaned in previously as it belongs to my employer and im using her junk room/tools to work with whilst she is not at home (with her permission). I will go out today and buy some decent brushes and take heed of your info -thanks for taking the time to help me xxxxVery proud to be Strip club member No 430 -
Hi all, Been lurking around here for a while getting some inspiration for my spare room and I've been overwhelemed with ideas! Was up while 3.30am the other day with my mind working overtime! Not really a good idea when you have a four month old!!
I need some help though I have some crocheted granny squares in white and pale yellow that I made that i was going to make into a blanket for my baby but ended up making her another two without using the squares, was wondering if any of you have any idea what I can do with them as I would hate them to go to waste!
Thanks

Thank youI don't mind you stealing the idea
I got the idea from here http://www.allaboutyou.com/country/day-out/made-from-maps-products-a-sense-of-place-54568?click=img_sr
I realised I could fit 3 hearts into my frame so I found the 3 places that ment a lot to my mum and then cut the areas out of old mapsIt is a great idea that will work for any age/person
BensonsmumI love your frame :T
