  • thanks shirlgirl and dorry :) I'm hoping for £20 or under.... is that good? I've just seen a g plan table and chairs that have a starting bid of £50 and really want them, so the cheaper I can get it the better :)

We're going for the 30's look but with a shabby twist. It's a 30's house and on a plus side most of the 30's furniture is relatively cheap :) although there is a lot of veneer :o

£20:eek: this is MSE! I normally only pay 99p for my pre-shabbied pieces :o. Tonight I am painting an old TV cabinet which I think I posted pics of few months ago. It has been sat in an unused room until last night when I started the sanding. The most I paid is £15 for a TV cabinet because they seem to go for more money than other items. TBH it is what it is worth to you that counts. If you've been looking for a while and it is the first one that has grabbed you then that is different to if it is the first time you looked.

Hi all - love the 30s sideboard - wish I could have it!!

Am trying to redecorate the house - shabby it up a bit. But everything has to be very child friendly and I'm trying to use what I've got, rather than go out and buy everything I think I need. So far I have started with the kitchen. I've taken down the curtain rail and found a blind that picks out the green of the tiles - I knew I had it, but originally bought it for another room. OH refused to put it up!! So will bang in a few nails to hold it up tomorrow. Have removed the mouldings from the top of the cupboards - looks SOOO much bigger, and have cleaned the cupboard tops. Planning on getting some green sticky back plastic to cover a couple of old tins of roses that I use for storage. Now just need to think about painting - or perhaps a wall sticker?.......
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

If you can beg or borrow a drill and a spirit level, your blind will sit so much nicer if screwed into the wall, using rawl plugs. It is dead easy to do, there are lots of video tutorials around if you google. :)

I always think a fresh coat of emulsion paint is a lovely remedy for a tired kitchen, but I'd love to see what ideas you have for using wall stickers! :)

That sideboard isn't my style, but I can see that it would look gorgeous shabbied up and in the right setting. White with distressing on the detail to bring them out would look amazing!

Sounds like you've got off to a great start esmf73 (but don't you just hate un-cooperative OH's!!!), and shabby chic to me is all about making the best of what you've got. The brilliant make overs on this thread just prove that there's nothing a tin of paint and bit of imagination won't fix :)

I've spent today sanding and painting all the woodwork in our hallway (well, except the stairs...haven't the strength to tackle the spindles yet!!). Mr BB has re-plastered the entire downstairs hall, I've painted two of the walls and am waiting for the plaster to dry so I can do the others tomorrow. Thought I'd share the little pic I made for my blog with you all.

We're painting all the walls in Dulux Heritage 'green clay' (bought a giant trade tin, great value and brilliant coverage!), with one wall in CK rose wallpaper and rustic oak laminate. I've got lots of vintage mirrors up the stairs so they will go back up, and I've got a really small wardrobe I'm thinking of shabbying up to store coats & shoes in. I'm also after a radiator cabinet to display pretty bits on, but I've just been asking on my blog for accessory ideas and would love to hear what ideas everyone on here has! :)

    Hi everyone,

Just nipping in to say thanks for all the tips about furniture painting. I am just about to reassemble my first attempt! I've painted two old and sad looking Ikea bedside cabinets. And although I'm not a shabby chic/French country person I'm very much a Skandi decorator this thread has been fab. So what was once medium oak is now smalt blue and ultramarine ashes. They're not perfect, a little wobbly in places - but I guess that makes them like me and I love them! Cheers all, keep up the good work!

I just stubled upon it while looking for dinning chairs and a buruea tbh... and I've just got an email saying that she would like £30, so it will have to be a no this time, we're on a tight budget! It's a shame as it is really nice.... but if I had bid on ebay, I would have got it for £20 and she would have had to have paid fees on that too, so I was hoping for under £20... oh well, I'm pretty sure I'll come across another, that evryone in the house will like!

I'd love to use what we already have, but we haven't got anything :o

Hopefully will be back on here with some before and after pics at some point... I'm watching a few things on ebay at the moment :)

Its amazing what a bit of colour does isn't it? Have done 2 coats of sage green ish paint on the kitchen window wall and it looks fab. When its dry will rehang the blind - until OH gets home in a few weeks when he can put it up properly. Have cleared and cleaned the worktops and am now thinking of transforming the dining room, which walks through from the kitchen. Have just painted a picture frame white - and will paint a mirror and another picture frame and then distress them! Will be measuring up the windows so I can go blind shopping at the weekend in various charity shops.

Working around the dark furniture that I don't want to paint and the various items of furniture that I have (too much, but need the storage!). Have a candleabra and wine stand in black metal which I'll spray white and then distress. Fingers crossed will get it finished by the weekend!!
