Yes but eggshell is usually oil based so then you would use thinner. If your eggshell is water based then you should use water.0 -

Just gradually coming to the conclusion I can paint furniture myself? I have a lovely 3 cupboard pine sideboard i got from a car boot, and see on ebay people advertise them as treated with danish oil.yesterday i bought a tin of clear from homebase is the right colour, someone else ( bit of an expert) told me some pine has a really tough laquer on it that is really too hard to remove, and to test it with a piece of glasspaper somewhere inconspicuous to see how easily it sands.
Any more tips anyone? How do you get the distressed look on the edges?0 -
At the weekend I got my table and chairs done and a set of drawers which was a wedding present and it sat in the roofspace... I didnt take a before pic of the drawers.
I used FB white tie emulison and then coated it with water based Varnish.

I'm not sure from your post whether you have decided to paint it or coat in Danish Oil, or a bit of both, eg painted body and oiled top surface?
For the distressed finish (on paint) some people paint a darker undercoat and a lighter top coat and then lightly sand the edges and parts that would naturally get more wear, in order to allow the darker colour to show though. Others just paint in one colour and sand the edges etc to allow the natural wood to show through.
With regards to Danish Oil, you do need a clean finish sanded right back to the natural wood, before you allow several (maybe even 6 or 8 coats) allowing the appropriate drying time between coats. I always recommend RUSTINS brand and tell people to avoid COLRON like the plague because of my own experences. Rustins gives a natural sheen and does not build up like Colron.
I have never had a problem removing varnish from modern (60s onwards) pine furniture. Shellac, which was used before then is a little harder to remove, but to be honest the only really difficult part is getting it out of intricate carving or moulding, which is doable but a pain in the neck! The really difficlut thing I have tried and failed with is removing a waxed finish. You can't oil over wax with the same success as with bare wood, and wax penetrates the wood quite deeply so you have to sand a lot off to remove every trace.
Hope that helps!0 -

I've already commented on your blog irishgirl, but those both look great. I love that cabinet you've bought too.
I finally got around to doing some makeovers today - the first was really just a new lick of paint, but there's a before photo on my blog if you're interested.
Then I finally got around to doing up my little vintage deckchair. I'm thinking of doing a mini tutorial if anyone's interested? I was so scared of doing it but it was pretty simple in the end.
