You will need to remove the finish on both of them before you stain them and it will be important to get a good clean surface before staining, as wood stain has a habit of showing up any blemishes. I'd wait for a fine day and take the varnished ones outside and use a belt sander if you have one. I think you can use paint thinners/stripper to remove wax but others may know better.

Wood stain is easy to use (easier than paint) but I found it really caught in the back of my throat and gave me trouble for days, so make sure that you have good ventilation. The finish will be lovely though! :)

Thanks, i will wait a while till weather a bit better, and i have time and i'll give it a go.

I've been busy snapping kitchen pictures, and thought I'd share the little chalkboard I made over. I think it cost me 50p from the car boot sale last year. I just gave it a couple of coats of primer, a couple of chalky emulsion and distressed the edges. I also re-painted the blackboard bit.

That is a lovely chalkboard and floor Bibbity. Is it real wood? (the floor, not the chalkboard!)

    Stunning Bibbity. Love the chalkboard.

Thanks :) nope, it's cheapy cheap laminate! Wasn't sure I'd like it because I'm not a fan of 'fake' things iyswim but the bigger the area that gets covered the more it's grown on me. Then again, anything had to be better than the floral green carpet...
