I don't have enough girly friends in RL. Mostly because I think either they or their husbands feel I might hit on them (like try to pick them up not actually hit them)

I see these girly friends at Westfield, in the park, pub whatever just together or eith their kids and i think, why can't that be part of my life? I love kids!

Ok Mom update: still asleep. woke-up for coffee and ginger biscuits. Back to sleep.

I am going to do my leslie sansone video. (quietly)

Oh NL, that's so sad, I would love the opportunity to have you as a RL friend. I do know how you feel about not having enough as I find myself in that situation atm.

    Hi NL
Sorry you suffer from the misconceptions of others and feel that's why they don't engage with you. That truly is their loss, you're a great gal with so many friends on here that know you, without any superficial nonsense in the way.
The comment about kids really struck me. I will avoid the glib 'oh you can have mine' quip that would be too facile. Is there anyway that you can be involved with kids in another way that allows you to nurture ? Any stuff in local schools, charities that sort of thing ?Or does the work nonsense not give you the time ?

..I wonder if that's just your perception, NL? Must say I particularly value my gay RL friends precisely because sex is removed from the whole equation - it's so much easier to have a close platonic relationship with someone when there is no possibility of an embarrassing drunken grope! (Why would a gay person try and hit on someone they know isn't interested? Doesn't make sense - nobody likes being rejected!).

Hmm. Have you thought of volunteering? There are plenty of schemes for under-privileged kids in London who'd be glad enough of a helping hand. One of my mates used to run a go-karting club for young teens which was very successful - his aim was give them a fun alternative to hanging out with the gangs and teach them mechanics along the way (a very useful skill for non-academic kids). Though he was careful to keep his private life, umm, private.

I am quite feminine looking and literally have had husbands of friends ask if I'd like "to join them?" UH... NO!

Hmm. Have you thought of volunteering? We have been greenlighted to proceed with adoption in a neighbouring council. I may have mentioned this on another thread. After successful home visits, crb, medical (which was a miracle I passed), financial (miracle 2) they have told us they need to interview all OH's former partners (why!) and interview my employer (who doesn't know I am a lesbian and it would likely destroy my career). In addition to which because of our ages they think we are best suited to age 9 and up, which isn't what we want. So, I am GM to 6 and get to do a lot of babysitting!

Oh gosh no. trip to America, tryp to Belgium and EuroStar tickets, movie premires, annual national tryst passes, about £1,000 in cash, yogurt, books, dvd's radox and lots more :D

Isn't it funny, I have very few RL friends, probably cos I can't be bothered to nurture them. I'm not on facebook and don't do all this telly texting on the old mobile phones that most people seem to do, and as I don't drink very much these girly nights out just don't do it for me. As a result, whereas there are several girls and ladies that I have met through work about whom I care deeply, and would hope that they also like me, I have rather lost touch with them as I have moved jobs. This is why you lot have become so important to me, my lovely, lovely virtual friends.

I really would consider Robin's excellent suggestion - where I live there is a programme where you can spend just an hour a week helping young children with their reading. I did it a few years ago and the children seemed to like me (the teacher told me that they thought I was 'cool') she qualified this (in response to my bemused expression) by telling me that even though I was old (er 42 at the time) I wore make up and trendy clothes lol.

For me it wasn't just about the reading, for children who struggle with it it can be a real ordeal, so I would spend some time getting them to read then give them one of my motivational speeches. I would tell them (these were children from a very poor area and were quite disadvantaged) that I too came from a very big family with more boys than girls, and that the ONLY thing that my dad did with me as a child, was now and again take me to the library and buy me a bag of chips on the way home - therein began my love of reading. I told them that when things got tough at home (which they did - a lot) I would retreat into my own world with my beloved books. I would read a word that I hadn't heard before and if I couldn't determine its meaning from the context of the sentence I would look it up in a dictionary and remember it. Over time all these new words I'd learned found their way into my vocabulary and as a result as an adult I could speak and write well, and this allowed me to succeed in life in ways I could never have dreamed of when I was that skinny little thing with charity shop clothes. Their little eyes would light up, their mouths a perfect o of wonder. I found this experience so rewarding at a real visceral level. One hour a week, that's all, and their reading DID improve, and you never know, they may still remember that cool Dotty old lady with the big words that spoke to them so softly and with such assurance that they too could improve their lives.

Speaking of motivation, young lady, have we weighed in today? Hmm?
  • Great post Dot :T

NL, I'm sorry to hear that the adoption agency is making you go through so many hoops, I hope you get to a rewarding conclusion somehow.

Fabulous wins! I too am a comper and have won £1,000, a trip to Legoland and overnight stay, a weekend in a cottage, a gold necklace, kids games, edibles, concert tickets and a few other bits and pieces but never a trip abroad. I'm always hoping for that or a big cash itv win!!
