ok well I dragged myself through the shower, gave the hair a shampoo and blow dry, put some make-up on for this Burn's night thing even though what I really want to do is spend the night in wearing dressing gown and watching repeats of Lewis.
I also changed the bed and washed the sheets today so I can completely focus on fleabay tomorrow.Mortgage: £280,752/ £262,515.84

In the past, i know, i only used SO's. Somewhere along the line, everything changed to DD's and it's very rarely you can use SO's, these days?
I don't know why, but maybe i will try and find the answer, and come back to you.
Maybe we should all take more care with our banking and our banking will take more care of us?
Maybe i'll start a SO v DD thread? :rotfl:
Organisations see DD's as guaranteed money (I suppose because they are able to take it from your bank account at an agreed time) whereas with SO's they are relying on you to send the money (which some people might not do).
But of course you can just cancel the DD, usually up to 2 or 3 working days before it is due to be taken so not really guaranteed money.
I get all my clients to pay their bills by standing order on a day when income goes in - a lot of my clients have never heard of SO's - I think they are so much safer in terms of knowing that any organisation isn't just going to help itself to your money and potentially leave you overdrawn/with charges etc.0 -

Thanks PG - I just wish I could post at the time all the conversations are happening instead of a day late when the thread has moved on.
Unfortunately I cannot log on while at work and I am subscribed to so many threads that I don't have time to catch up in an evening so get emailed the subscribed threads updates overnight and at breakfast each day I have a catch up (hence why I post 1 day late :rotfl:)0 -
Hi NL - I'm pleased that you decided to go out, even if it's just for a little while, I feel sure that you will feel better for having made the effort to put some nice clothes and make up on, I always do. I sometimes think that when we really don't want to go out, we should, as the fact that we don't means that we are becoming a bit hermit like therefore should make the effort to meet our RL friends.
Do you feel a bit calmer about THEM now that you have an accountant to explain things (however F&W has done a marvelous job of that - I am going to go back and read all that stuff in detail when I submit this post) and look after your affairs now? Do please let us know what your accountant says on Monday won't you?
Granny thank you for sympathising with me after my rotten day at work yesterday. I haven't told any of my colleagues, or indeed Mr Dot, not that I am ashamed or anything, just a bit embaressed, but I wanted to get it off my chest, which I did here, and your kind words made me feel better. Oh yes, DGD has had more hugs today than she has ever had, and I am so loved up (even thought she has been a little s0d today)
Have a good weekend and I will pop in tomorrow to see how you are.
Dot

I'm aware and did explain the difference between SO's and DD's, in a deleted post.
What i don't know the answer to, are the legalities or consumer rights, as to why so many companies don't allow payment by SO.
Do you know the answer?
ThanksFred - Where's your get up and go?
Barney - It just got up and went.

I have asked the powers that be. My company for instance cannot take DD only ask customers to set up SO no problem you may think BUT unlike DD if a SO is canceled NO notification to the recipient is given thus we have in many situations only found out people have cancelled SO and done a runner after more than 1 month .... Not good for cash flow or debt control!Start info Dec11

My, my. What has it all come to?
You can see the reasoning why DD's are preferred by the recipient, BUT, quote
"Any person or company with a current account at a bank or building society in the UK can set up a standing order."
Sorry to hijack your thread NL.Fred - Where's your get up and go?

I hope you had a nice evening this evening my dear.
Dot your DGDs antics made me smile, (from Piq's diary), they do have their ways of sorely testing us don't they, even though we still love their little selfs. Don't beat yourself up about the work thing, we all have these blips and the only thing to do is accept it as our error and learn from it xTargets

Sorry F&W I did not want to come across as teaching grandmother to suck eggs but as I was late to the thread by hours I thought I better explain where I was coming from.
I too do not know the legalities or consumer rights of people being able to pay by SO but what I do know is that the majority of companies do allow SO but do not advertise it as they prefer to have DD.
Take NewLeaf and THEM for instance - they have told her she is not allowed to pay by SO but what is there to stop her paying them by SO if she has the bank details.
Anglian Water (our water supplier) is a very good case - as I said I get my clients to pay by s/o on the day benefits hit their account - when I ring AW to set up an arrangement their system does not recognise SO as a payment method so the client has to be set as a payment booklet payer and then the booklet has to be sent out and then not used. Such as waste of paper never mind time and energy.
They do not print their bank details on all their bills but what I have started doing at work is keeping a note of major companies bank details so I always have it to hand if I can't get through to them by telephone. I must have a list nearly 100 long!!!
I also noticed on my elec bill that Scottish Power call it Banking Direct when they give their bank details (I assume because they think you will make a one off payment to clear the bill), other companies call it Faster Payment.
It is very confusing for everyone!0
