Nope, they are wrong. The store displayed an offer of £20 off when you bought both £20 airtime and a phone. Due to the tills failing to give you the discount of £20, you were overcharged by £20. You should get a full refund as per Tesco's policy. Oh, if they try to say it's an out of date offer, tell that that TS says that doesn't matter, as it's the responsibility of the retailer to make sure that all offers are in date and working and that no misleading price indications are given. Ring them back. Don't take the phone back. If all else fails, contact TS. If they are offering you the £20 back, they are admitting that they've overcharged you.

Richie's going to tell you about the * trick...though you shouldn't need it, as leaving the poster up is an offence in itself.

  • I still have the phones and the voucher but will it matter that they've given me the £20 back... I took it after i'd phoned customer services from the shop and she confirmed they were right.

    Thanks for your support

Richie23 - Could you possibly mail me as well with the info... I am in a similar situation but didn't take the refund.
  • Just got off the phone with the lovely people at Consumer Direct.

The way they break down the overcharge scenario is basically into two aspects of the law: (1) The civil side where the customer enters into a contract with the retailer and (2) the corporate side which is where prices are advertised that are false.

On (1) she was not very helpful, indicating that I may have a long uphill challenge on my hands for compensation. On (2), she said TS would investigate because this is a criminal offence.

In a nutshell, regardless of whether you get R&R, I will now report Tescos for every single overcharged item, and advise you all to do the same. The penalties are much higher for them and TS far more interested, but obviously TS need lots of evidence from good law-abiding citizens like us!

With the mobiles, I saw an offer on a T-mobile phone (cant remember the model) that said "save £10 when bought with £10 airtime"

Would the discount trigger if you bought airtime for O2 or voda instead of T-Mobile?

The offer just says "airtime" and doesnt mention T mobile
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

Did they say what kind of evidence or is notifying them enough?

I still have most of my receipts with the R&R marked on them, would they be interested in seeing them?
