Bedz wrote:Hey there guys,
I was in Tesco last night and perhaps have seen something of interest and wondered if you could confirm that a pricing error would occur..
Basically they still have the xbox promotion posters up, with the game of the week as 'The Godfather', the date on this offer was for the week commencing 29/9/06, however the SELs for all the games including 'The Godfather' are white. I was just wondering if anyone would know if the discount would come off of this purchase or not..
Just a week ago thanks to this forum I managed to get myself a Nintendo DS & Brain Training R&R'ed, so I also registered to thank you for that tip!
I took advantage of the same set of circumstances you have outlined - £20 off poster was up and both the game and the console were in stock.
I think the SEL was white for the console, the discount did not come off.0 -
MyUserNamesTaken wrote:"Basically...."... As in implied, which you have done. Therefore, I will not retract. Also, as stated on the poll thread, the poll is biased because you used Taxiphil as an example. Taxiphil would be the first to admit that he's done far more than most other people.
What you believe I have implied is your own personal subjective assessment, it is not fact.
Therefore you should retract your statement because it is untrue, it states I have used words I have not, prefixing it with 'basically' does not make your statement correct.0 -
Ging, do us all a favour and keep this stuff on the arms or ethics thread, this is for R&R discusion EG I went into Tesco today, and yet again they tried to overcharge me, I stood up for my consumer right to be not ripped off.
ps..u really think we give a stuff if people think we are good or bad ? Save yourself the time, we are all bad and condemmed to hell..but we will be allowed to take our X-Boxes and PSP's as hand luggage..retract my !!!!!!Back to square one, no apg, no comment.0 -
MyUserNamesTaken wrote:The policy covers all Tesco stores, including expresses and metro stores. It does not cover .com. The Express stores will argue it, as the store workers don't realise it applies to them as well. If you encounter a problem in an Express, ask to speak to the manager.

bagand96 wrote:Tesco buys a product X for 60p, and decides to sell it for £1. It goes in the system for £1 and the SEL prints and is displayed as such. From this point Tesco makes 40p profit per item sold.
For one reason or another the buyers decide the price of product X needs to increase to £1.05. From this point the accounts will be done on selling at £1.05, thus making 45p profit. The price is changed in the system and a new SEL will automatically print at a store ........ but, tesco aren't making an extra 5p per product sold, because the accounts are already being calculated at 45p profit from when the buyers decided to increase the price.
I think this explanation is a little confused between (a) the forecast and (b) the outturn. "The accounts" are, I assume, based on the price at which an item was actually sold, not the price it was expected/forecast to be sold at.
Therefore, if Tesco buy something for 60p and sell at £1, they make 40p profit on that item. When they sell at £1.05, they make 45p profit. That's it, easy! Nothing to do with accounts being calculated differently from when the buyers decided to increase the price - accounts are based on actual sales.
So Tesco make an extra 5p profit on each item.0 -
bagand96 wrote:The thing is its not extra profit. The till price is the correct price set by buyers and commercial departments. That figure is used in all the accounts. So they budget for that price.
An overcharge occurs when the SEL is wrong, due to human eror. So its not extra cash in the pockets of shareholders. So really, 3% (or one billion a year) of sales have had incorrect SELs.
Its not an excuse, customers shouldn't be overcharged. But its not extra profit either. Also worth remembering that for every incorrect SEL causing an overcharge there will be one causing an undercharge. But in the same way, these don't loose Tesco money either. I would be very surprised if that £20 discount wasn't paid for by the supplier, so nnot passing it on is EXTRA PROFIT.
Job with a tabloid newspaper anybody?
So, are you stating that the recent scenario where the £20 discount for Xbox 360 plus GOTW not coming off at the till WASN'T extra profit? Surely in that scenario it was the TILL price that was incorrect and NOT the poster? And do you really believe that Tesco funded the £20 discount and not the supplier?I spelt my username wrongly on purpose, by the way!0 -
lol i'm not bothered who mucked up that xbox/psp error!! i was buying one anyway the fact that they as usual overcharged me was besides the point!!
thank you all MSEs that provide us all with very useful information - I stood my ground for my R+R, something I wouldn't have done before if it wasn't for your outstanding advice

The other thing to note is something Spa said on the Ethics thread. Promotions are run to increase sales. Spa argued that if the POS is pulled, no-one knows about the promotion, thus sales do not increase. This means the supplier isn't supplying the goods, as they are not selling, thus the extra discount given by the supplier doesn't kick in. However, I would argue this: If you look at the products being pushed, it's normally the 1st or 2nd top game in the charts. As such, most of the time, people will go for that game when buying a console, as it is a new release. This means the supplier is still giving Tesco the discount, which Tesco fails to pass on to the customer if it pulls down all POS due to till error. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Just eating some delicious quality street while catching up on the days activities.
Just incase anyone's interested, the expired sel said 2 for £5,
but after double checking receipt, it scanned @ 3.28 each, but then discounted 44p at the bottom, as the new offer is 2 for £6..only put them up by £1 a pack meaning the current white sel scanned correctly (shame).
Sorry Frequent, I don't understand. If the sign said 2 for £5.00 then £1.56 should have been deducted.
If the sign said 2 for £6.00 then 56p should have been deducted.
Could you clarify please.
I did get mine anyway, just hope temptation dosen't kick in as they're for Christmas.0 -
