JJB Employees are on very min wages and tbh don't really give a stuff about the job. The employee should of acted with more care or even just called a manager across to get authorisation or check what the stores policy is.

(Freddie doubts it, because Freddie thinks OP is wanting compy from JJB for their cares negligence?)

Because the woman has no money and JJB is great big corporate and ready to submit a compy cheque, by return of post!

Do you never get embarrassed? :D

The fact remains JJB should have a procedure in place for lost property. I'm sure they do have one, and presumably whoever gave the ipod away had not been made aware of it. If this is the case, it is the manager who should take some responsibility for not ensuring their staff were trained to deal with lost property.

Common sense dictates that what the member of staff should have done is take the ipod in a staff room, and speak to their manager asap in a private area. They could have then worked out what would be relevant questions to ask any potential owners asking after it- i.e. size, colour, music on it etc and take some details down when handing it over.

The woman who stole it took a gamble and it paid off because of what I presume to be an ill-trained member of staff. If they had known what to do- or at least used some common sense- it would have been obvious the woman was an opportunist thief and the child would have got his ipod back.

I do, however, agree that JJB are not going to be helpful in this matter and the only thing you can do is convince your son to go to the police. I don't think it sends out a good message to his son that people like that can get away with it because the victims choose to move on and forget about it. She still committed a crime at the end of the day, so don't let JJB moronic whingings about it being a 'civil matter' put you off. The police should see it differently.

If you dropped your purse or wallet in a shop you wouldn't expect the shop to just hand it over to someone who'd heard the conversation about finding it and tried their luck claiming it, would you? You'd at the very least expect them to make some basic checks.

I once dropped my wallet in Dixons. (Currys Digital) There was an announcement just as I walked back into the store. (I went to get some cash and realised I didn't have my wallet) I went over to the desk and had to confirm what was in the wallet and what the wallet looked like.

Some posters are harbouring some deep disturbing behaviour. Almost to the point of asking for a lynching on the staff member! Many years ago these posters would have been at a witch hunt trial or public lynching. No wonder government has to nanny the masses.

As for pushing the police, well it's not like television, it won't get solved in an hour.
The police will have to take a report and statement then request the information from jjb regarding credit card, then seize the CCTV and convert it for court use, then request from the credit card company the private details of the woman, then arrest the woman, then put the matter before the crown, then they will prosecute, then a court hearing were the staff, police, thief, two barristers and witnesses give evidence and finally a community sentence along with compensation. Cost to public purse? Excess of 6000. Now times that figure by thousands in relation to petty crime across the land and you soon realise why the police and courts are overwhelmed and not on the beat.

All because a child left his toy in a shop...

I suggest the police need to get involved quickly.

I had an incident where someone used my bank card without my knowledge or permision -There was CCTV of them doing so-and the police were notified. The same day. It was simple-get the CCTV tape- see the person concerned using the machine-match the timed and recorded transaction, Deal with it.

Nope-they only went to get the tape a month later after I rang them to enquire on the progress -by then the tape was erased.

I used to work as a manager in a bowling centre and would often have mobiles and the like handed in. Staff were not allowed to return lost propery but had to go through a manager-Managers had to make basic checks that the property did belong to them -if the phone was locked with a pw get them to activate it-if unlocked ask them to tell you the number in the directory for "Mum" or "Home".Not exactly rocket science

Oh come on - you're going round in circles here and STILL ignoring the sensible advice from those who know what they are talking about.

    For the upteenth time:

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET ANYWHERE BY GOING AFTER JJB

Your claim is with the woman who took the phone.

As much as it's terrible that theft has taken place, do you really think that the poor member of staff at JJB deserves what is being said about them on this forum? All they've done is do what most people would do in the same circumstances, which is act in good faith and hand over an item that someone claims has been lost.

If you had lost your iPod and gone to JJB and they'd refused to hand it over because you couldn't prove your identity I bet you'd be on here complaining that they didn't use common sense! It works both ways.

The poor guy/girl was just a member of till staff. What are the chances that someone tries to claim an item that's just been handed in when it's not theirs? Tiny, I bet.

Why are you wasting your time having a go at JJB when numerous people on here who know what they are talking about have told that this is a total waste of time? JJB have not done anything wrong legally. The till staff member might have been a bit hasty and didn't check the identity of the customer, but he's there to serve customers and sell items, not to act as a lost property manager. They might have a lost property policy, but how often is it invoked?

Why don't you spend that time pushing the police to obtain copies of the CCTV so that they can solve a pretty cut-and-shut case of theft?

Numerous people on here have also said that JJB ARE at fault in this situation. I can't act on any advice given till my son gets home at the weekend - he's away at the moment as I've said, and meanwhile neither JJB or the police will talk to me because it wasn't me who initially reported what happened.

And my son's claim may well be with the woman who took the ipod (NOT PHONE!!!) but what is he supposed to do about that? How could he find her? Surely that's a job for the police - or so I thought. My son HAS pushed the police to obtain copies of the CCTV tape but they have repeatedly refused as they say it's a civil matter.

I'm going to show my son the advice on here when he gets home and I'm sure he will then take action based on that advice. I can't do anything.
