Informing on neighbour

  • As it happens I do live in a council house but, believe it or not, I work full time 37 hours a week. I do my bit to support my family and contribute to society by paying my income tax and NI and ensure my family keep their noise to an acceptable level - unlike him. I'm fortunate enough to work flexi time and have weekends off plus annual leave so that's how I get to know his working pattern.

Why dont you get an exchange if its that bad? Your housing officer would be able to give you sound advice on rights etc.

Again for the third time......have you actually spoken to him about the noise etc? Is there a neighbour on the other side?

If you own your house get a copy of the deeds from the Land Registry and see what you can and cannot do at your house.
If renting contact your landlord or local authority to find out the terms and conditions of the deeds of the house you are renting.

Speak to the Council. They will tell you if you are allowed to run a business from your home. If you explain your concerns they may well investigate and put a stop to it.

Unless you have it on very good authority he is claiming benefits and is not self employed I wouldn't contact the benefits agency at least until you've tried the council.

So sorry for the abuse that you have received on this thread OP.......wonder what kind of neighbours these people make? hmmmmm - makes the mind boggle eh?

You have the right to enjoy your home - if the neighbours activities stop you from being able to enjoy your home, then there is a valid complaint. Only you know if he's an approachable person or not. Now see, I'd find someone with a car that needed some work on it - and have them pop by and get a quotation from him or something as proof he is running a business......but then, that's me.

Is he also in a council house? Maybe your first port of call could be your housing officer (if there is one - don't know how those things work I'm sorry). I would be thinking that a petition could be a dangerous thing, as if he is disturbing the entire neighbourhood, it could be anybody who complained - whereas, all it takes is one of his buddy's down the street to let him know you are getting a petition together and your life could be complete hell for years to come.

I would go the route suggested above, and find out through the council's disclosure policy, whether or not there is a licence to operate a business there in the first place, and then go and speak with the housing officer and see what advice they offer.

Unfortunately there are some neighbours out there who don't give a hoot what the others in the neighbourhood think, don't care whether their peace and quiet is destroyed - as long as they get to do what they do - that's all that matters with them. If he's that inconsiderate, I can't honestly see how going and talking to him will be of any benefit.....you're either considerate, or you're not.

Best of luck - and yes, do keep a log of the noise and then when the council says 'no we can't do anything without a record', you will have your record ready for them. Good luck!

The OP was the one who described her neighbour as a parasite....that is an INSULT!!

The OP also made a negative jibe about some of our replies!.....that is an insult!

None of us including the OP and yourself know the ins and outs of the situation. The neighbour IMO would be pretty stupid to go ahead and do all the work to his garden etc without getting permission first.

I cant really see any posts where the OP has been attacked either??

The neighbour is a parasite if he is running a business illegally-and there is no way I can believe that he is being allowed to run such a business in council property. You say he may be stupid to run such a business without permission, but clearly from the responses here, what does he need to fear if the majority of people think that what he is doing is fine? How would the council ever know, if everyone is going to 'live and let live, even when a neighbour is making your life hell?
One poster compared him to a french informant for wanting to report this matter, using an insulting term. Another told him to 'be an adult' and speak to the neighbour-implying he was being immature for wanting to sort this out (in my opinion no good will come of speaking to the neighbour-he is most likely to reply with a few choice words telling him to * off and mind his own business. The Police actually discourage conversations such as those these days as they can be inflammatory.)
Half price sky called the OP a parasite as he 'assumed' he was living on benefits when he is in fact working. I'm living on benefits you know-this parasite is recovering from cancer.Worked full time for 30 years before becoming ill, but still obviously a parasite at the moment (although I don't live in council housing, not that it matters.)
Maybe you can point out his multiple negative jibes as I obviously haven't read his repies closely enough to notice them. Whatever, he asked advice and has been given a fair amount of grief for even daring to suggest that what his neighbour is doing is at best, inconsiderate, and at worst illegal.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

I'm with the OP. Contact the council, describe the circumstances and see what they advise.

Then like us you must have garages/off parking spaces for multipul vehicles and you respect your neighbours by not having high powered lights rigged up around your property to allow you to work in darkness and that you only work on your vehicles in sociable hours?

Hey, I used to have high powered floodlights around my old house.
They were there for security reasons and the ability to see round the grounds in the late evening in winter. Am I antisocial?

leave him alone...hes caused you no harm as he

and remember what goes around comes around;)

Yes he IS causing harm - the most major bit being that he is causing a lot of noise - one does NOT expect that when living in a residential neighbourhood. The floodlights are obviously intrusive as well. It must also be pretty annoying that he is taking "more than his fair share" of the parking spaces.

I would certainly be annoyed about it personally - and report him to every "relevant authority" I could think of.

Do it anonymously - that way he will suspect you...but he will also suspect others as well and he will have no way of knowing for certain just who it was that reported him.
