Informing on neighbour

I’m astounded at the attitude of some of the people replying in this thread! The car parking space outside our house is no big deal, I only mentioned it, but as for “trying to make ends meat” what about honourable car mechanics in the area who are renting their garages and doing everything above board who he more than likely is undercutting and possibly putting out of business eh?
Yes he often works late at night and keeps our kids awake. He has floodlights installed so he can continue working after dark. There’s been several times this summer when I’d have liked to sit out in the back garden and relax but sadly that’s impossible thanks to his constant racket. I might as well not have a back garden! He certainly must have a lot and friends and family with a hell of a lot of broken cars if that’s who they all belong to! Presumably it’s OK for parasites like him to do as they please and our fault because we stupidly took a house next to him? I’ll just continue paying my taxes (some of which are possibly going to him!) and struggling financially while he rakes it in and disturbs the whole neighbourhood then.0 -

If its affecting the WHOLE neighbourhood, then get a pettition (sp) going.
How do you know he's a parasite? He could be just trying to make ends meet. He could have full permissiong to be working from home. He may well be paying more tax than you.
A family member used to be a car mechanic and lived in a cul-de-sac and worked 8-8 M-F. He did it for 30 years!
So have you spoken with them with regards to all the noise?

Just a quick thought. If it is very noisey, then contact Enviromental Health and they will monitor it.
Also, keep a daily diary just incase it goes to court or other officials.

I had a similar situation, informed the council and they made him move the cars0

I totally agree with you! Having lived next to inconsiderate neighbours I know how debilitating and unpleasant it can be, and I see no reason why YOU should move to allow this man to continue his illegal activity. Having been through the council application process for running a business from home I have no doubt that he does NOT have permission to do what he is doing. If he DOES have permssision (oh there flies a piggy) then you will have done no harm to report him-and by the way, the council can tell you IF he has a licence without him even knowing (it is part of their disclosure process, but you have to write to them officially giving his address to recieve this information)- we were forced to use a landlord for premises for our business and subsequently found that not even our landlord had mananged to get permssion even though he had no close neighbours.
I also agree totally with the poster who pointed out that with him not paying business rates-which is punishable by being detained at Her Majesty's pleasure-he could be damaging legitimate businesses who ARE paying a lot of business rates, VAT and Income tax.
On the other hand as I said-if he is all above board than reporting him will not affect him at all. At that point you could lodge a complaint against his permission to run the business at home both with the council and the environmental control.Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0 -

OP - are you a homeowner? If so, check your deeds and see if you have an covenants about running a business from home.
Our deeds say you are not supposed to run a business from home, but I'm self employed. The council said it was fine to do clerical work at home as I'm not causing a nusiance to anyone, but they would object if I was making a noise or having lots of visitors coming. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Under Planning legislation, you are allowed to run a business from a residential property.
However, nhe property should still be obviously residential. Once the business has become big enough that business activities are bigger than the residential use, then you should apply for a Change of Use, which may or may not be granted.
Examples of 'acceptable' business use in a residential property might be an eBay business using a bedroom, a picture framing business using the garage, an accountant using a garden office.
If the business use involves noise, pollution, people coming and going all day, cars parked causing a nuisance, then it has gone past being a business use ancillary to the domestic use.
Call the Planning Enforcement Officer at your local Council who will investigate and if necessary take further action.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

speak to your housing officer about it0

The fact you are attacking the OP and supporting his inconsiderate neighbour says far more about you than it does about the OP! You obviously haven't read the rules of this forum-he posted for help and advice not so that you could insult him!
The OP was the one who described her neighbour as a parasite....that is an INSULT!!
The OP also made a negative jibe about some of our replies!.....that is an insult!
None of us including the OP and yourself know the ins and outs of the situation. The neighbour IMO would be pretty stupid to go ahead and do all the work to his garden etc without getting permission first.
I cant really see any posts where the OP has been attacked either??To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0
