  • As a backstop, if no joy from Ikea, would your household insurance cover the damage?
  • Hi all,
The cabinet that broke was only 40cm wide (but they are nearly one metre tall so the doors is pretty heavy) and not highly used either - only had spare loo rolls etc. in there.

These cabinets look very stylish, but I would not recommend anyone to buy them. I am currently trying to compose an email to send to Ikea.

No household insurance sadly :o so my only other would be claiming via my credit card if need be. If Ikea do not respond well to my email, next stage will be Consumer Direct or Trading Standards then the credit card company.

I meant to say Buildings Insurance as I believe that toilet pans etc are covered by Buildings not Contents Insurance.
  • Small update - Ikea are sending an independent inspector to look at the cabinet. I will update again with the outcome, hopefully there may be a way of making the doors safe for those of you who had been interested in buying them. Though personally I feel the product should be recalled and redesigned so that the hinges attach with screws rather than glue.

Well they are taking it quite seriously to send someone out, rather than just offering a refund/replacement. Im guessing its due to the additional damage that was caused.

Im wondering if the steam etc in the bathroom affected the glue? (obviously wrong kind of glue if that was the case!

There was a similar thread about a bathroom mirror I remember (Not ikea though) ..I'll do a search and post it if I find it..

Nope, cant find it, but the jist was that the company (bathstore I think) argued that the 'rusting' under the mirror glass was due to exessive condensation, the customer argued (via the small claims court) that the excuse was not reasonable, as it was designed as a bathroom mirror and should have been fit for that purpose, they won and got their money back.

...May or may not be helpful to know!

hav Ikea visited and assessed yet?
  • Dear Slinky_Malinky,
I found your thread while Googling Godmorgans. I have exactly the same issue with this product, so I was wondering what the outcome was for you with Ikea?

I bought two of these doors, installed them above my toilet and sink. The same door has fallen off TWICE. The first time they replaced it, the second time it was out of stock so we went home empty-handed.

I rang their customer services manager for the branch who said that there had been a product recall on this range and she would arrange a remove and re-install with the improved versions.

This was in December and despite phoning and emailing her since then I haven't heard anything.

    Very frustrating!!

    Thanks,

    Gerty

    Gertyfrommanningtree:
    1. Phone them up and ask them for their customer service address informing them you have tried to resolve the problem before on the phone but they have so far refused to respond.
    2. Send a recorded delivery letter to that address outlining the problem and mentioning that you have called them and emailed them about the issue already with the first and last dates you contacted them. At the end of the letter state if you don't hear from them within 14 days of the date they receive the letter you will take further action.

You should keep a copy of the letter and the recorded delivery slip.

As the letter is send recorded you should be able to see when they receive the letter. If you can't as for some reason they don't sign it, it can still be used as proof that they highly likely received it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • Gerty, any update on this problem?

I've just had exactly the same problem occur, luckily it was on the lower of two units and occurred whilst I was in the bathroom so spotted and literally caught before further damage could occur!

This happened to me too this morning. Off to Ikea to see what they say.

    --edited with update--
Wembley store staff will not help without proof of purchase. I did not save receipt from 5 years ago but they will accept e.g., credit card statement. So I've ordered those from the bank. What a hassle - wish I'd saved the receipt.
