Can you be fat and work at Tesco?

I'm thinking of applying for a night time shelf stacking job, but I don't know if I'd be too fat for their uniform since I'm a size 28. Nobody fat works at our local Tesco.

My confidence is really low since I put on all this weight and I would like to avoid the humiliation of being told they can't hire me because I'm too fat.

Can someone help me out with this please?

If the refuse to hire you it would because of ability/references etc, not weight.

I am assuming this is a wind-up though.

As boo_star says it is ability that counts, I have seen and know of people who are your size and work in supermarkets, so apply and get that job.

Of course they will. I have seen a very large man on the tills in a supermarket.

I remember Boots uniforms go up to a 32, and I imagine Tesco are about the same. There are plenties of big girls at our local store - I notice that some wear different trousers, so would imagine they are allowed to buy their own if need be.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • If it is stacking shelves then they will be looking at some sort of fitness or ability to do the work. Goods are loaded onto metal cages and its likely you will have to push/pull them to a location. You'll also have to take the boxes off the cages and put onto the shelves. You will have X amount of cages to empty or X amount of shelves to fill before your shift ends. Shelf filling is not the same as sitting on check out. So if you feel that you are healthy and capable, then by all means apply.

Thank you so much for replying. We're in a bit of turmoil here at the moment and I probably didn't express myself very well.

I have had asthma all my life, but I am fitter and stronger than most women I know. I don't think that lifting heavy boxes or pushing those metal cages is going to be a problem.
  • There are lots of assistants in our local Tesco who are over size 20+
and seem to manage very well. I hope that you get the job!:)

Then what are you waiting for. Get your application form in the post and I wish you all the best.

I was a size 18 when I started working in a supermarket, and just from the extra walking I initially started losing weight. If you hate your size this could be a good thing for you!

Some places keep spare uniform in the most popular sizes for new people, which means they may have to order in specially for you. But it should be possible. If this happens, they should allow you to wear your own clothes as long as it's smart.
