Put feet up on the seat and got a criminal record

  • I travel to and from work on Merseyrail. There are posters everywhere warning people not to put their feet on the seats, though why you'd need to be told this I've no idea. So people who can read have no excuse (if you can't read then I'm sure this would be seen as a reasonable excuse).

The Merseyrail staff do not wear headsets to film people but there is CCTV on the trains. On the odd occasion I have seen someone with their feet up thy've been given a warning, which I think is more than reasonable from the inspector.

At home, our shoes come off in the porch - I wouldn't dream of traipsing thorough my home with dirty outside shoes on. Ask yourself this - would you put your trainers on your sofa or bed? Why is a seat on public transport any different? (If you would be happy to smear your icky shoes all over your furniture then you probably shouldn't be allowed to mix with other people at all ;))

  • To be fair though it was all the rage years ago before privatisation and most TOCs still have the notices up and will enforce it if they see fit - or they have a BTP member on board.

Just hope they all roll it out fully soon but there's people on here who do not like getting fined/in trouble for anything on the railways as they see it as a free ride.

Yes, true about it before privatisation, my company has always had the stickers on the train warning people, but it wasn't enforced until a few years ago.

Hopefully other TOCs will roll it out soon.

It's about having respect for others. Putting your feet on a seat says "I couldn't give a d4mn about anyone but myself".

    Hope the fine is huge.

I think the only time I've put my foot on a seat is when I was on crutches, and needed to rest my knee. But even then, it was literally only enough of my foot to give me enough support.

  • I think I'm the only one to feel sorry for the man involved. Yes, it is bad manners and selfish to put your feet on the seat. But is it really a crime?

You know, normally I'd agree and say you shouldn't sweat the small things, but a few years ago in New York, they brought in a zero tolerance policing policy for all the little niggly anti-social crimes and misdemeanours. It has really paid off. All crime is down, right up to the murder rate.

We really ought to have a similar thing here.

  • There are signs everywhere, you want to travel on the train, you adhere to the rules, simple as. I do think a criminal record is incredibly harsh, but a fine is fair enough.
