If you like kids you could always check http://www.greatgrottos.co.uk/ and see if they are recruiting for seasonal Elf/Santa positions at a shopping centre near you. :)

Very bad news indeed. No wonder I can't get a job in any of the dept stores. The employment situation stinks nowadays.

And as regards those self-service checkouts, which are sadly becoming all too common now in retai stores, I HATE them poison! They should never have been introduced. We should not be forced into using them by interfering shop floor workers, if we don't want to. And furthermore - these blasted self-service tills are contributing to the rising unemployment now, annoyingly obviating the need for employers to take on more staff.

The Guardian is reporting some bad news on this:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/sep/09/argos-cold-christmas-prediction-viewpoint

"A couple of years ago, Argos hired 20,000 temporary staff. Last year, the figure was 12,000 staff working 12 hours a week on average. This year, it will recruit 7,000 workers doing 5% fewer hours."

Christmas temp jobs used to be so easy to get and gave a boost for Christmas plus something to put on the CV or even a permanent job. If the trend at Argos is repeated throughout the industry and recruitment levels are down over 50% from 2 years ago it is going to be a very poor Christmas for many.

Around my area the big difference this year in the supermarkets is self service tills, I think they are going to be taking up a lot of the demand instead of Christmas temps.

I got an interview with Boots for a Christmas job, but couldn't make it, and despite numerous phone calls to the store (as soon as I received the email and since), have not been able to get hold of the right people. Any messages I have left have not been returned :(

    Anyone else had this problem?

Is there a phone number or email for applying, I have had a look on the recruitment page but don't see any contact info
