Thats good, perhaps he only had money to pay with off of a credit card and thats why he paypal'd? Good thinking to get him to sign for it. the only time I've had something picked up I accepted cash - a whole pound mind you!

So why pay the huge paypal fees? You would get more net proceeds by accepting cash which could then be used to pay off a credit card bill rather than let paypal take their cut. If every penny counts, as I'm sure it does when trying to pay off debts, why give money away unnecessarily.

I like paypal, I am always in trouble on the ebay board for defending it against the anti paypalers, but I do begrudge paying tjheir fees if I don't have to.

Unfortunately Soolin is dead right! I got stung in my early ebay career and discovered the hard way that online tracking is the ONLY acceptable way to Paypal. You can have all the proof in the world and it's irrelevant to them. Another popular scam is to claim for item not as described and then when paypal tell them to return the item (tracked) to the seller for a full refund, they send back a box with some rubbish in it and keep the item. And paypal pay out because the buyer can prove return. The scams people pull are amazing......and sad!
  • Yes I understand you get more by accepting cash rather than paypal! I think paypal is a good system, I don't like the fees either.!
  • i always bend down to "do up my shoe-lace" right next to any money i see on the floor

or if no-one is around i will just pick it up!

have no lower or upper limit (although a tenner is the most i have found), am not adverse to checking phone-boxes too but they don't seem to ever have change left in them :(

My son told me that outside the youth club/ coffee bar in town the teenagers throw pennies on the floor because they don't like the weight of them in their designer trousers. Guess where I'm walking the dog tonight :D
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in. :D
  • the bloke came for his table yesterday afternoon, paid by paypal on Sunday (not sure why he didn't just bring the cash)

living room looks a little emptier now

got another cd yesterday which i am hoping makes at least five times what i paid for it.

will have in the charity shops later and hopefully bag a bargain (or five!)
I bought a specialist item ;) (actually a musical instrument!) on Ebay recently for just under £2000. (You can see I trust most Ebay sellers! )

I travelled from London to Crewe  with the cash to pick it up - do you think this was OTT? The train fare was £14 more than the delivery charge, but I had the security of trying the instrument and handing over cash....

Jobbingmusician........I've sold a couple of special pieces on ebay that cost of £2K each - on one I drove it all the way to Liverpool (I'm in north London) and the guy paid me cash. It cost me £30 in petrol but at least I didn't have to worry about Royal Mail breaking it and I saved the paypal fees. Definitely worth it!
  • Not feeling brave enough (or clued up enough :p ) to join the challenge at the moment, but love reading this thread as you've all got loads of great ideas. :T

Finally got round to listing my first ever item for sale on ebay and made a grand profit of 12p after fees and p&p. Ah well, at least it's a profit I guess.

See, it's posts like the above that tempt me.... :D

Bought some comics earlier and a software game that I thought would sell well - checked current ebay auctions and the comics do not seem that profitable, plus there are no bids... how do I look for past sales/auctions that have ended to compare?

When you are on the page that shows current auctions look on the Left hand margin and you will see a box that says 'completed listings' tick that and you'll get th elast 30 days of sales. Lots of green means it is good to sell, lots of red means back to the charity shop!

You can also use the completed listings search for tips on how to sell an identical item. For instance, what is the optimum post and packing to charge, what is the best start price to attract bids. If any show as unsold where the majority are showing as sold, look at the unsold ones for tips on why they did not sell. When selling on ebay any information you can get is useful.
